DUMAS AS A COOK.
Hi Friends Found Him Acting as Chef
In a Trouville Inn.
The familiar utory of the arrival of
the great Dumas at Trouville on a May
afternoon In the thirties is a cheerful
anecdote. Latiubing loudly, he crossed
the Touquen carried on the shoulders)
of a sturdy Normup peasant and en
tered the primitive little Inn of those
early days with til! the clatter and ex
citement whi'-u usually distinguished
L La Mere Oseraie. the good woman
who kejit it. tnl.l liitn flatly that she re
ceived none but puiutera. The Trou
ville of those days was u tiny (ishiug
village which only a few artists had
discovered. Dumas promptly alleged
that he was a "painter in words" and
even offered to paint or write her
signboard, which the other clients un
Krateful dogs had promised, but neg
lected to do. This handsome though
confusing evidence of good faith mol
lified the good innkeeper, and she con
sented to receive Dumas at the aninz
ing price of 2 francs day. tout com
pris. Trouville was indeed then what
the French term un petit trou pas cher
"a little hole not dear."
When the painters, friends whom
Dumas had come to see in their remote
corner, returned toward evening from
the green woods and glades along the
little river's valley they found the
amiable giant filling the Inn with bis
cries and laughter and brandishing a
great spoon In the kitchen, where be
was presiding personally over the prep
aration of an evening meal which
promised to run his bill for extras into
figures hitherto unknown in Trouville.
A Capful of Wind.
The origin of the phrase "a cupful
of wind'' can be traced to a Norse
king, Eric VI.. who died in 907 A. D.
lie was credited with the useful power
of directing the wind to blow where
be wished by the simple method of
turning bis cap to thnt point of the
compass. Ills powers were much ap
preciated and trusted and resulted In
his being known as "windy cap."
There Is no evidence as to whether he
could regulate the force of the wind
as well as the direction. Presumably
he could, or his faithful U-lievers
would not have been so many. A "bag
ful of wind" Is another common ex-
