Tha KunssoM of Brld Brook.
It Is not generally known that the settle
ment of Nov Loudon wets commenced under
tha authorujrof 2aaaa?huatts. John Win-
throp, iu fomder, bore a commission from
tbe government of that colony. It was first
called "The Plantation of Nameaug," and Its
bounds extended on tbe west to a mall
stream two miles west of Niantic, now Nian-
tlo Bay, which was called by the Indians
8unkipaug. It issues from a pond of the
same name and falls into the sound between
Black Point xad Giant's Neck.
During tb first winter after the settle
ment the inter of 104(1 at a time when
the whole co intry was covered with a deep
snow, the im ident that caused the nnrnlng of
this stream and lake Bride Brook and Lake
occurred. Application was made to Mr.
Winthrop ti. go to Say brook and unite
young couph in marriage, there being in that
place no person duly authorized to officiate
on such an evasion; but he had been com
missioned by Massachusetts and could not le
gally fasten the nuptial knot in Saybrook,
which was under tho jurisdiction of Con
necticut H i proposed therefore to meet
them half tray on the brink of tbe little
stream thut was his western boundary. The
proHsition vas accepted, and there win
throp, ai-cotnpuniedby a party from his plan
tation, met t le bridal train from Saybrook
and tho rit was performed. In conclusion
Winthrop gave the uaoie of Bride Brook to
the stream, t y which it has ever since been
known. The pond is also called Bride Lake.
Tho annals of history can furnish but few
incidents inoi-e striking than tbe Bride Brook
marriage. Jl the accessories of tbe scene
are pictures ue and impressive. Tbe little
company stood in the midst of a dreary waste
of snow, far :'rotn any human habitation at
this time exempting the huts of savages. An-,
cient forests and immense solitudes were
around then, beyond which in shadowy
magnificence, vast and indefinite, lay the un
explored wor Id, on whose brink they stood.
We might pc rcbance add to these features
the stalwart! or ms of natives, a tribe of whom
dwelt not far from the place, darting among
tbe trees or looking on at a distance. Tbe

IT REMOVED THE PIMPLES.
Rotjnd Mountaik. Tex., March 29, '87.
A lady friend of mine has for several
years been troubled with bumps and
pimples on her face and neck, for which
she used various cosmetics in order to
remove them and beautify and improve
her complexion, but these local applica
tions were only temporary and left her
skin in a worse condition.
I recommended an internal preparation
kuown as Botanic Balm which I have
been using and Belling about two years;
she used three bottles and nearly all
pimples have disappeared, her skin is
soft and smooth and her general health
much improved. She expresses herself
much gratified, and can recommend it to
all who are thus affected.
