The enterprising citizens of Quincy
have arranged fcr a monster soldiers' re
union and celebration durioir the month
of September. ITie annunl meeting of
tbe Military Tract and the Central Illi
nois 8oldiera ai d Sailors' Re-union as
sociations will te held at Quincy on
ifc'pt. 17, 18. 19 and 20. A number of
Illinois, Missouri and Iowa regimental
reunions will he leld at Quincy on the
same dates, and it is safe to predict that
this will be the laigesl gathering of sol
diers of the lati war ever held in the
west. Wednesday, Stpt. 18, is to be
governors day when the governors of Il
linois, Missouri at d Iowa and other dis
tinguiRbed vistto n will review the mon
ster procession f veterans. It is spei
cially fitting tbiit this great reunion
should be held at Quincy, as the Illinois
Soldiers' home, one of the largest in the
country, is locate 1 there.
The magnificent spectacular and pyro
tecnic exhibition. "The Last Days of
Pompeii." will be iven on the evenings
of Tuesday. Tbuntdav. Friday and Satur
day, of reunion w Sept. 17. 19, 20
and 21. This Is one of the grandest dis
plays ever witnessed and is presented at
a cost of $20,000. The exhibition repre
sents one of the festivals held in the an
cient city or Pomj eii. The city, with its
magnificent temph s and lofty buildings
Is reproduced, witi a large lake on which
boats float gracefully, in the foreground.
In the background Vesuvius towers up
ward to the clouds The festivals, cus
toms, games and sports of the ancient are
correctly represented, 400 actors being
numbered in tbf cast. The exhibition
concludes with tht thrilling irruption of
Mount Vesuvius a ad the terrible destruc
tion of the city.
I bis grand exhibition is to be given at
Quincy on ten nights, four nights during
reunion week, as already stated, and also
on Sept. 10, 12 and 14 and Sept. 2i, 26
and 28, the week r receding and the week
follow mg the reunion.
A fall race melting takes place at
Quincy on Sept. 24. 25 and 26. which will
bring together a laige number of the best
bones in the country.
Excursion rates and trains have been
secured on all railroads leading to Quin
cy. Doubtless hut dreda of people from
this locality will gn to Quincy to witness
this great spectacle.
