The Flag of the Union.
Although the star spangled banner was ea
tablixhed by resolut ou of congress June 14,
1777, it waj not until forty-one years later
that the present n ethod of signifying the
number of stutes by the number of stars was
adopted. It had lo ig been obvious that a
new stripe could not be added for each new
state without makiur the flag unsightly. Tbe
stripes would either have tn he
else the field enlarge 1 out of all proportion to
mj union, in ibis Congressman feter H,
Wendoveir. actinir oi the nptwrwn nt Pant
S. C. Reid, famous for his defense of the
privateer ueneral Avnihtroug, advocated the
adoption of the pren ut design.
Capt. Rei.l wanted all the stars grouped
into one big star. Mr. Wendover did uot
press the adoption of this feature. He suc
ceeded in defeating; various compromise
schemes, amoug thou one to have stripes for
the old and stars for the now states, and an
other to limit the stirs to the old thirteen.
Still a third was to fi t the stripes at an arbi
trary number. Finally Mr. Wendover's per
siKtency was rewarded by the passage by the
house of the following bill, which weut
through the senate wi:hout dissent:
That from and aft t the 4th day of July
next the flag of the Uiiited States be thirteen
horizontal trics, alti rnato red and white;
that the Uuion have t vnty stars, white in a

The Telephone Kar.
You have a tclcphou ear. Vou may not
know it, but you have .ill the same. It is tbe
left ear, for it is on rtcord that only a very
email perceutngo of m.?n or women use the
right eur nt the toll pl.ono. As a matter of
fact, the trluphone ha; suddenly come into
prominence as a medical proosition, and un
less the scientists are mistaken the bulk of
men nud women who n the telephone within
a few years may erpoc; to find themselves
rather hard of hearing in the left ear. This
is ttecause when using the telephoue every
muscle aud nerve oft !ie ear is strained to
catch the faintest sou id from the person
speaking at the other end. Dr. Olivia- W.
Moore, the eminent cy ) and ear sp.vmlist,
wan aM.isI the other da if he had heard of
any cn.es of deafness f r in the telephone.
"It is rather didloult to state exactly," he
replieil. "I have seen where the repeated
sound of an instrument, jr the rcpotiti.ui of
any sound, has caused ileafness. Telegraph
operators are in dangir of iujining their
sense of hearing. Boiler makers ofteu suffer
from deafness. In the (.uttetrui-tiou of boilers
it is necessary for one mi n to l inside of th
boiler and the other outside, and the inces
sunt noise caused by the riveting of tbe
boilers always causes bit ler deafness or an
affection of tlio ear. As o the telephone, it
no doubt has the same el 'oct. It is natural
and reasonable to supjose that a person
listening f.r a sound, ami not knowing the
moment when it will cone, may injure the
memhranoof the ear, anr. in time this might
affect the bearing iiower.'' Albany Express.
