Sioux tribo. Having lioon told by a friend of

Spot's outfit were iiin to have a sun dance
near their agency, on the Keya-Paba, about
thirty-6ve miles Iruaii the post where I was
wiring, in Dakotiu, 1 got up a party of offi
cers to rule over and see it Standing Elk,
who was to bo the raud marshal, agreed to
provide us with rerved seats. .
After some difflc ulty we found the place,
and saw before us, on a rising plateau on the
other side of the )ieaks of the Keya-Paha,
hundreds of tepees and several thousands of
bucks, squaws ani papooses, also a great
mass of other amm il life. There were 14,000
r 15,000 Indinns present. This crowd,
mounted and on fit, was centering on the
big dance house, . here the festivities were
In full blast, the dancing having begun with
the first rays of th sun, all of the dancers
having spent the pi evtous nipht seated in a
circle in the center of this tepee waiting for
the sun to rise.
The Wa-che-pee tepee (or dance house) was
an im mease circle, inclosed on the outside,
except a wide entr nce by posts set in the
ground; the spaces filled in with brush, with
a shade of the same built over the top. The
middle of this ini-losnre occupied by the
dancers was open a the full glare of a pow
erful sun. All around this circle, on the
posts supporting the shade, were hung ten
ners of different col wed calicoes, painted buf
falo hides and gayly decorated shields of tha
same material. Th i general effect was that
of a circus.
In the center of the circle was planted a
tall Cottonwood poll, from which were hung
banners, lariats, buffalo heads, medicine
bags, bunches of )inted porcupine quills,
bundles of birds' ft thers and large figures of
men cut out of bufl alo bide. This pole was
cut, hauled toita place and planted by a num
ber of maidens the evening before. It is the
only part of the ceremony women are al
lowed to participati in. They are even ex
cluded from the tnciosure, but are kindly al
lowed to gratify th tir curiosity by peeping
through the outside brush.
The orchestra, located opposite the en
trance, consisted of six enormous tomtoms,
operated by as cboiw a body of thieves and
cutthroats as ever murdered music. The
dance, being contin jous from the rising of
the sun until the going down on the second
day, requires urn-eating music, so there was
detail of musical experts to relieve each
other at stated internals.
A BE ERE TEST.
The dancers, more than 150 most of them
youngsters going thiough the ordeal for the
first time are range 1 around the ceuter jxile,
keeping time with t te tomtoms with a pecu
liar step that require; one foot at a time to be
raised, wliile the weig ht of t he body is brought
down on the beol that is touching the ground
The body is crouched and leiit forward with
the arras raised, the light arm being extended
above the bead whet the left foot is down,
and the left arm when the right foot is down.
This alternating moti n constitutes the dance,
and can he kept up a ithout gaining ground.
But the fresh youths iccaKionally spring both
backward and forwa-d and thereby elicit ap
plause. All the time the daucers must face
the sun and look at it. They are not allowed
any head covering, a id are stripped naked,
except a breech clout
Th dancers hold ir their mouths whistles.
made out of the hcues of turkeys' wings,
which they blow as t ley breathe, the object
heing to keep the nioi.th dry. They are not
allowed water or foor during the whole time
of the dance (about 'orty-eight hours). To
intensify their desire for water, which is the
harder of the two to I -ear, several philanthro
pists go among them .vith water, which they
pour from a cup into a bucket in front of the
dancers so they can e and smell it These
philanthropists are accompanied by good
Hamarif na, who t the power of the sun
by flashing light from a looking gtaa.in.to the
dancers' eves.
Only the most tendt r hearted of these cul
tured childreu of nat ire are tn trusted with
these delicate mitKiouf, and they must belong
to different lodges tha a the dancers they ap
pear before. Their di sire is to break down
the dancers, while it is a matter of pride
with the members oi the lodges to which
these youngsters belor.g to succeed, and it is
permissible for a buck, not one of the
dancers, to go alougsii le of a tired f rieud and
let him lean his back i gainst him, both keep
ing op the dance. Although the dance was
not more than six or taven hours old when
we appeared, there w re several dancers be
ing assisted in this mi jiuer. The only cessa
tion of the dance alio red the dancer (each
one gets bis chance) is when the leg medicine
man, m ho stands near the cental pole, calls
him up to be operated upon. But he is only
permitted to stand still long enough to en
dure that pleasure, wl ioh consista in having
incisions made in the iesh of his breasts or
on bis back below the shoulder blades,
through which are nil throngs of deer akin,
to which are tied either a buffalo bead or a
lariat, taken from tha pole.
While this matter of sight and sound ia
kept np a warrior wl I enter the circle, and
in a loud voice orate t the crowd, telling of
his exploits in the good times gone by, when
acalpuig was not a la t art This dance I'm
telling of waa held tha next summer after tha
Custer massacre, and several of the audience
present had been activity engaged in it These
orators talk well, and what they say is lis
tened to with great intention. It Area the
young men's hearta w th a desire to emulate
the deed's described, a ad keeps tha danoara
nerved up to go turoug it with an ordeal which
will entitle them to ap ear and tell what they
nave done, even If it only consista in the
killing of an old Ponca aquaw.
Bun dance Is a fair t iai of a man's ability
to endure discomforts. And when a young
buck has successfully gone through with it
ha ia entitled to be considered qualified for
the viclasitudea of a warrior's life. Capt
Allen Smith in PitUbu-g Dispatch.
