" Why do tbeae California bred horaea, both i
trotters and runners, develop such tremen
dous ieed at an early age, and then retire for j
the rent of their livesf"
That is a question that has been put to
very horseman of note in the country, but
not one seems able to answer it. A gentle
man, a horse fancier and now and then a
buyer at the California sales, being much in
terested in tbe phenomenal trotters thatcotne
from that region, went down to I'alo Alto to
see the famous Stanford breeding form, and
of it he said: PaJo Alto is about forty miles
from San Francisco in what is known as the
rant Clara valley. The horse part of the
estate eompris about three thousand acres,
tlinnph a good many more acrea are in vines
and forents aud the private grounds of the
railroad baron's summer retreat.
Talk about princes and princesses of effete
monarchies being reared in velvet and fed
from gold spoons; the nearest approach to
that in this great republic is this equine prin
cipality at Palo Alto. Dean Swift's cele
brated Houybnbums never had a better time
in their kingdom than have tbe modern

! ISVtNSI STABURHIVr
As soon as the babies have forgotten their
mothers comes the beginning of their life's
work. The leading halter ami a soft rnbber
bit kept in the mouth for half an hour a day
is the ABC. Then comes the kindergarten
track to discover u any of them have a nat
ural gait. Half a dozen are put into the saw
dust circle at once. A man stands In the
middle with a long whip, which be waves
furiously, but no littla one is ever permitted
to reel its sting. All start around the ring,
Qi-Kt in a coltish canter, and then some little
pupil more promising than the others will
strike a trot. Soon another will do tbe same.
An apple or a lump of sugar is the reward of
merit. Usually before the class has finufaed
all of them will be Jogging about on a trot.
Then a new batch is token, and in a few weeks
forty or fifty fillies and as many colts have
gone through the kindergarten course. Mean
time every little one of either sea: is handled
and fondled. Tbe colt and fillies are relent
lessly parted at weaning time and never see
raah other again except at a distance. Co
education of the sexes is frowned upon at
Palo Alto. The little ones are very tame and
follow one around like a lot of kittens. If
you stop in the paddock they instantly sur
round you like a lot of chattering school girls
and begin to search your pockets with their
velvety noses for a bit of fruit or sugar. Sot
one is ever scolded or permitted to be fright
ened in any way, nor is tbe whip ever used
except as a badge of authority.
When the Infant aristocracy is bridle
trained and thoroughly tractable, say at 9 or
10 months, and from that to a year old,
comes tbe first introduction to harness. Tbe
colts are not quite so proud of this as a boy
with bis first pair of boot, nor do tbe fillies
seem to enjoy it as much as tne girl does her
first long dress. Indeed, they are pretty
"scary" at first and require tbe presence and
experience of an old stager beside tbem at the
pole of the breaking cart. But their timidity
soon wears off, and it is astonishing how fast
It must be remembered that by this time
these youngsters are to the uon-criucal eye
almost full grown horses. Their legs are
stroug, their bodies well filled out, their necks
plump, their eyes bright and intelligent and
tlieir coau shine like satin. All this is tbe re
sult of tbe forcing process. On the Stanford
farm the? year-old colt looks like the well
matured bone of 8 m lilinobv At 1.4' years
old begins their bard work on the track. It
is then that tbe best and most promising are
selected for a yearly record.
HOW THKT ARB T&A1XED.
The railroad station for Polo Alto Is Menlo
Park A mile from Menlo you euter a broad
gateway, pass a porter's lodge and euter upon
the big domain. A magnificent brood avenue,
lined with stately oaks, and winding through
a dense foliage, leads you to the senator's
bouse, another mile away. You pass that,
and the same avenue, still winding for another
mile as only Frederick Law Omstead eon
moke it wind, brings you to tbe crest of a
Descending from the slight elevation you
pass through a lane 100 feet wide. This is
the main street of the hone village. On
either side far nearly half a mile are half acre
paddocks, each with wausr tubs, feed troughs
ana an oa tree or two lor auada. These are
divived, not by the ordinary board fence of a
Kentucky form, but by palings painted white,
with each gateway done In brown. There
are nine huge hay bams clustered about the
center of the Tillage. These are painted in
brown, with white trimmings. A great grist
mill, with steam power for grinding the food,
is near at band. Another huge barn is for
the work bones and mules of the place
nearly one hundred and fifty In number
the servitors of tbe pampered aristocracy of
tbe kinfrdom. A magnificent race track lies
on tbe outskirts of the village, with a train
ing track for colts within tbe outer circle.
Another building is set apart for tbe "kinder
garten" a great canopy covering a sawdust
ring an eighth of a nuie Ion. This is when
the littla weanlings, six and eight months
old, ore brought to be taught their flrjt
'Right here,'' said tbe enthusiastic horse
lover, "is where I got tbe first inkling of what
it la that enabled a 8-year-old la California
to trot a mile in 2:18, as Banal did. It is forc
ing and feeding. Trainer Gallagher gave me
the history of Sunol, and tbe life she led there
for two years is the life of all of them. When
Sunol was six months old she was brought in
with twenty other fillies from tbe pastures in
which their mothers roamed. Tbe weaning
process is quite easy. The youngsters are put
on steamed grain food at once. In the morn
ing a quart of steamed barley mixed with
bran, in the evening two quarts of ground
barley steamed And moistened with lime wa
ter, is about their daily diet. That is pretty
high food for a weanling. When I was a boy
on the old farm in Pennsylvania It was a pretty
lucky colt or filly that ever saw anything but
bay or grass until it was 2 years old. But at
Palo Alto the babies are stuffed with grain
from -the start. I was there in July, and
there was no green food to speak of, with tbe
exception of green corn tops, of which tbe
little ones had three diets a week. Even then
it was chopped in a steam cutter and mixed
with bran. Chicago Herald.
