EVERY WOMAN SHOULD HAVE SOME
KIND OF OCCUPATION.
All Wumn May Ba Attractive and Noble,
but They Mnat llmmi So Tbroajh Their
Own Kffarta Bewars of Absnlnt Idta
naa Thera Are Threat Couraea Open.
Some writer, a wotnau i.resuiiiably, advian
other women not to be "mopna." Welxter's
li llnit ior of tbis word ta "a dull, stuiil per
son," and in view of tbis fact it wouM almost
em thai vucb advice U unneiewary to moHt
women. It may rea-sotuthly be auppotied that
no woman wants to be consilred dull or
stupid. To be sure, werannot all I brilliant
geuiusng, liut there is no occasion for being
IhorouRhly uninU'rextins. We all know wo
men who are inclined to mope, but why do
they do itf In ninety-nine caseaout of a hun
dred, I believe, it is because they do not know
what to do with themselves,
WOMAN'S NATURAL CAPACITY.
The average woman is not stupid far
from it but she allows herself to become so
for wunt of a healthy occupation for mind
and body. And this is the fault of her edu
cation and training. Site baa no special
ta.-te for any particular study or employ
ment, and so after her school days are over
she settles down to mojie. She is not very
strong iKTbapa, and she has not sufficient
money to utidertuke various things that she
would like to undertake; and so she folds her
IihikIh, shuts her eyes and her mind to tbe
Iwnuties of life anil mopes.
And w hen aha has reached this point she
takes to novel reading; the lighter the fiction
the more suitable it is to her frame of mind.
A ud every one knows the prevailing tone of
the light novels ofetoday. Not only girls,
but many young married women lead such
aimless lives. The mind become deterio
rated uinl frivolous; from gossip tbe tongue
loads to scandal, and the beet years of a wo
man's life are frittered away in doing noth
ing ami learning nothing.
It is not necessary to lie priggish, nor to
have a hobby. These things are rather
prooft, of an uncultivated and narrow mind.
And tiegiu now. Do not wait for something
to turn up. I have littla patience with thorn
who take for their motto the French line
that "Everything cornea to him who know
bow to wait." It la not true; everything
cornea only to those who know how to go and
get it. Every woman bas within her tbe
making of an attractive and noble person,
but she must help in tbe making; she can
never taecome noble and attractive by mop
ing. Tbe present is the only future that we
know, and we must utilize it to the utmost
liefore it becomes the past.
And I do not mean Uiat only plain women
should cultivate their mind; a handsome wo
man usually bas as much intellect as a plain
one, and it requires quite as much cultiva
tion Who bas not met elderly women who
eniil. talk of nothing but this or that one
who died last week, or who is to be married
next week I Events of importance in tbe
live of those Immediately concerned ; but so
tunny iiersons marry and die every day that
unless we know them personally their mar
ruiges and deaths have not tbe slightest inter
est for us. It would be well for such persons
bad they learned to play whist in their youth,
so tlml in their old atre they might have an
nccniiHtion that would endear them to some
one, and yet compel them to be silent.
DON'T BOARD VOIR ENCRUIOl.
If you have no taste for music, do not tor
ture the piano and the ears of your relatives
and friends; let music alone. If you Lave no
tuste for painting, do not make hideous daubs
aud call them pictures, and if you have no
eye for color, let fancy work alone, unless it
be of a kind that is colorless. And if you feel
the unci of occupation, which you ought to
feel. And out what you can do and do it with
all your might. You i.eed not put your wares
in the market. You need not take a position
as tyjiewnter, clerk or saleswoman, and no
keen some other poor woman from earning
an honest living, uuleas you need the money
as much as she does. There are other ways
of occupying one's self, and a woman w ho
really wauta au earnest occupation will find
one; it may be an occupation that givea
pleasure to herself only, or it may ! one
that will beneflt others; It will depend upon
the woman, but whichever it is, she will be
huppior and nobler for occupation.
Our stores of energy are given us for some
purjKjee. they are not to be boarded forever,
but carefully expended on worthy objects,
and tbe object to ha selected lies with our
selves. Many women Sod their happiness in hus
iiaud and children, and many others in tbe
borne of their childhood, or in making a home
for themselves. Uthersexpend their energies
in professions, for which they have prepared
themselves since they were children, baring
shown a decided taste for some one thing that
their parents had the good eanaa to cultivate.
It is uot to these women I speak, but to tbe
larger class of girls who have not bad this
special educatiou. Doubtless every woman
expects her daughter to marry, and marry
well, between the ages of IS and 2. Some
girls fulfill these expectations and some do
not. The girl who does not, after tbe novel
ty of freedom from school duties and tbe ex
citement of aucietj have worn off, longa fur
some steady occupation that ahaU employ ber
niiiui ana tune, ii ebe tuu no one to advise
her a ben she has reached this period, aha is
to lie pitied. It is a turning point in her life.
where she makes a choice for good or for
evil. There are three courses open to her:
the exriroment of society, the taking up some
serious work or tbe inactivity of moping.
Many women have not tbe energy for either
of the two first, so they sink into the moping
hubit, ouly to be roused some years later to
regret mia-ient hours and wasted energies.
Which of tbe three alternatives will you
choose? Miss Palfrey in Sew York Star.
IiHluatrj- of Welsh Women.
Among the mountains in Wales the bat
most in vogue is made of a strong, coarse
straw, with a very large, rather shallow
crown, and narrow brim, which is tbe most
convenient shape for carrying loads. On tbe
top of the bead is placed tbe "torch," a kind
of pud made out of a stocking stuffed with
wool Over this tbe hat is fastened, and it is
a usual thing for tbe women to walk five or
six nnies to the nearest town, buy their gro
ceries or other necessaries, and carry them
home on their heads, walking up and down
the rough mountain jiatha with a baby tied
t" their backs, while their bands never cease
the knitting, without which no true Welsh
woman is ever perfectly happy. London
