THE OAT CROP.
The Knlargesnent of Area end Increase of
rrmiuet SISMta 180.
Comparatively few persons have an
adequate idea of the magnitude and im
portance of the oat crop in this country,
yet its uses for mart and beast are so
various that it is entitled to rank among
the moBt important of the farmer's pro
ductions. The rnlargpmetot of the area
and increase of product have been very
large since 1880, but there is Ettle differ
ence in the rate of yield, which has had
an annual average of about twenty-six
uusni'is 10 me acre, witn an average
price of thirty-two cents. From a prod
uct of 417,85,8.S0 bushels in 1880, the
crop amounts! to 701,735,000 bushels in
lSriS. As a producing state Illinois was
in the lead, with a production in round
numbers of 137,000 000 brothels, followed
by Iowa with 67,000,000, and Wisconsin,
Minnesota. Kansas and New York with
from 4P,.000,fMiO to 40.000,000 respectively.
For the prem-nt year, 1889, the crop
n:m Kimi-reil iu some sections from un
favorable weuthcr at harvettt tia.e, but
with an increased area it is estimated
will exceed that of 1883 some 30,000,000
bushels. The oat is cultivated through
a wide ranee of latitude and on a greater
variety of soil than any other grain and
is liable- to fewer injuries. The propor
tion of husk to kernel and the compact
nia of the grain determine the value of
Oats are a remarkably well balanced
food. Containing, as they do, a large
quantity of the most valuable constitu
ent, they approach what may be called
a perfect food, although they contain a
Inrjrer proportion of husk and fiber than
other grains, such as wheat and barley.
A great variety of soils can be used for
their production and on land of good fer
tility iarite crops can be made. As hu
man food the grain is in constantly in
creasing use, and for animals it is almost
Trapping Ground Moles.
Ve give an illustration of a simple
trap that may be successfully used in
catching that troublesome little pest, the
ground mole. It is made of two ash
boards, a full inch in thickness, seven
inches in width and two feet six inches
long, attached to one end by a broad butt
hinge. The form given to the bottom
board is shown in the cut, the central
slit being made to admit the free play of
the trigger, which is represented by it
self in the right hand comer of the
A MOLE TBAP.
It is of iron, ten inches long; the lower
part shaped like a paddle, five inches
long, one and one-eighth inches wide,
and the left hand end notched as shown,
and three-quarters of an inch wide per
pcuulcularly. The post, sixteen inches
high, is curved to the circular sweep of
t lie top board on its hinge. The teeth,
six in numher, on each side, are riveted
seven-eighths of an inch apart, in a plate
five and one-fourth inches long and one
inch wide, containing four screw holes,
placed sigzag, and this is found much
tinner and more secure than if the teth
were inserted directly in the upper plank.
The trap is set, as shown in the cut,
across a mole track, first digging a hole
eight inches square and six inches deep,
aud returning the soil, taking care to
exclude all stones and large pebbles.
Press the earth down pretty firmlv, and
set the trap so that the trigger touches
the surface of the ground exactly over
the line of the track. When the mole
goes along his accustomed road, and
finds It obstructed, bis movements in re
opening the track inevitably heaves op
the surface so as to act off the trigger,
and the teeth on one side or the other
w ill catch him. Weight the trap with
a iifHVT nat stone.
alt fur Dairy Cows.
Dairy cattle ought to have accet to
salt every day, and salt should be added
to all their stable feed. A aeries of ex
periments has convinced me that when
cows are denied salt for a period of even
one week, they will yield from 14 to
1 -i per cent, less milk, and that of an
inferior quality. Such milk will on an
average turn sour in twenty-four hours'
less time than milk drawn from the earn
or similar cows receiving salt, all other
onditions of treatment being equaL

As a precaution against weevil in
