A French Woman at Bom.
Sbe helps to cook the dinner she has bought

kitchen, mbere two or three little holes in a

auch culinary feats as our great, roaring coal
tires have uo conception of she flits about
like a fairy, creating magical messes out of
raw material of the uiost ordinary description.
Yes, though a lady bora and bred, refined,
rlegaut aud agreeable in society, a belle in
her may, yet site does not think it beneath
her dignity to lighten the household expenses
by practical economy and activity. Tbe din
uer of a French family is cheap aud simple.
There is always soup, tbe meat of the stew
pan sometimes, if not strict in expenditure
another plate of uteat generally two vegeta
bles, dressed aud eatun separately, and some
times, not always, a sweet dish; if not tbat, a
Utile fruit, such as may be the cheapest, and
in tbe ripest season.
But there is very little of each thing, and it
is rather in arrangement than in material
thut they apjiear rich. The idea tbat the
French are gourmauds in private life is incor
rect. They upend little in eating, and they
eat inferior things; though their cookery is
rutlter a science than a mere accident ot
civilization. At borne the great aim of the
Freuch is to save; and any self sacrifice that
will lead to this result, is cheerfully under
taken, more especially in eating than in the
mere luxury of mere idleness. . No French
woman will speud a cent to save herself
trouble. She would rather work like a dray
bre to buy an extra yard of ribbon, or a
new pair of gloves, than lie on tbe softest
sofa in the world in ,Ucid Hue lady ism, with
crumpled gauze, or bare bands. Dorothea in
ladies' Home Journal.
"Strons Minded" Women.
J list where the weak minded woman stops
an J the strong minded begins it is bard to
suy. The boundary line is so vague, it is
nwseU so unconsciously , so unpremeditatedly,
lliiit some women do not even know wbeu
they Lave crowed it, until some morning they
wakaupand find the epithet 'Strong minded''
prefixed to thir names. And it is strange
that such an epithet should be used as a term
of reproach when applied to a woman, for
surely "weak minded" would also be an un
No sensible woman would like to be called
"weak minded," and no refined woman de
sires to be called "strong minded," taking tbe
word in its present and generally accepted
definition. For, generally speaking, when
woman is called strong minded" it is meant
that she is eccentric almost to insanity, re
gardless of public opinion, and tbat no on
need be surprised at anything she may do,
for she is capable of doing anything and
everything that is queer. It may be argued
that the opinion of persons who are strong
minded in this sense is of no value. Very
true it is of no value, for, truthfully speak
ing, a woman who is strong minded is not
eccentric, nor regardless of public opinion,
nor likely to do anything shocking. Rather
should these things be expected of a weak
A strong minded woman is, first of all, a
woman of sense; she baa convictions, and
tlin courage to express them; she is clever,
aud nearly always talented. If she does not
conform to all the frivolities and small con
ventioualities of fashionable life, it is be
cause her mind to intent on higher and nobler
thino. She claims a right to make her life
bat she chooses to make it, tbe same right
that men have bad from time Immemorial.
She works for money if she wishes to do so,
or f i r the love of work, and tbe refined, the
cultured, the eople of broad minds and lib
eral views of life re)R-ct her and admire her
She is not the masculine woman. Heaven
frlid ! Rather should the masculine woman
be railed weak minded, in that she has tbe
weakness to be ashamed of being a woman
and to emulate a man in manner and dress.
