In Whiteitiarsh, MontRomery county, a abort distance fruro Kort WasbinRton, and only a stone's throw or two from the famous old fort in which tbe American soldiery in trenched themselves after their defeat at tbe battle of (rermantown, stands a substantia) nmnxion, which is notable for its age, tbe swiit ions connected with it and the etagnnt simplicity of its architecture. It stands nick fmm the Bethlehem pike several hun dred yards, and i shaded by venerable white in, borne chestnuts and other trees, some f which are more than a century old. It is an unusually large bouae, with a brick fmnt and an abundance of large windows. over the csjei of w bicb are pressed brick ot nainetitrttioits OLD TIM ARCHITKCTI'KK. The entrance is tbniugh a door of more tlmu onln.srilj lai'KO size, and, by menus of aMitne steps. In which are graven tbe in itials of the children of the residents for more tlinn a hundred years lck,and underneath a portico supvrted tiy large columns, quaintly rved. ll:e doorw ay enters upon a hail forty -v twenty fct, wjiicli tliviiles the house into vo etial (jurts, and l-ailmg therefrom are ninny dKnt, with arched and keystone! topa imt columneti sides. All the ceiiinirs are hirteen feet high. The rooms are large, but ii otherwise barnlike appearance is broken by the numerous doors throughout the house. It seems as though the owners had set them n herever tbere was an available wall space. The greater part of these doors open into sets, so large and so roomy as to be ample to bold a bedroom suite and still leave space enough to turn around. Kvery chamber has at tatst two or three of thete wonderful el'isets. Every room from floor to garret Is furnish ed with large old fashioned fireplaces, the mantels and fronts of which on the first floor are of black marble, and the fronts of those on the second floor of light blue tiles, on which are enameled curious figures. The main stairway leading from the ball to tbe gnrret is wide enough for a public ball, and by easy flights of broad, low steps from story to story, and is inclosed, except on tbe landings, where there are richly carved bal ustrades. Besides this stairway tbere are wo others, one at each end of the house semi-concealed, dark, uncanny, winding af fairs, set in the partition walls, and leading from tbe cellar to the garrets, and communi cating with all the rooms in the house. One of tbe garrets is nearly 100 feet long and 30 eet wide, and was fitted up in 1S54 as a lodge room for tbe Free Masons, who in that year iit from tbe tiermautown lodge, but was never occupied by them, on account of the death of the owner of the bouse, who was one of tlie seceders. nstead of rafters, tbe roof Is supported by heavy oak beams, on which are laid three IthU planks. Hidden away in the garretr are relics collected from time to time by for mer owners. A bundle of war arrows, the fliut heads of which are said to be poisoned, taken from an Indian warrior supposed to have been one of a band attached to the Brit ish army; two bows that belonged also to an Indian brave of the past ; a ghastly collection of human hones in a box bones that once formed the skeleton of a half grown boy; also au immense palm leaf fan, used by serv ants more than 125 years ago to keep the flies from tbe dining table of Samuel Morris, one of the owners of the place. There are conflicting stories as to who erected the mansion. As a result, its exact age is unknown, but it is agreed that it was built not later than ITU. It is stated on the one hand that tbe house was erected about 1721 by Henry Hope, tbe first owner of tbe roperty, after whom tbe place was named 'Hope Lodge Farm" three-quarters of a cen tury later, and who received a grant of 500 acres of land from William Penn. On the other band, It is claimed by the de scendants of Samuel Morris, the second owner, and who was also the possessor of a large null on tbe n issahickon, near by, that he was the builder, and this claim seems to be tbe better founded one. Those who claim Hope as the builder say that be was a bach elor, and that the bricks with which tb front of tbe bouse was built came from England. being brought over as ballast of a ship. The wood work of the interior is also said by com petent carpenters to have been imported. It is also related that when the house was fin ished he gave a grand bouse warming and a reception to meet his intended bride and her mother, invitations having been issued to all the leading families for miles around. During tbe reception, however, it is said be drank too much wine and mad nse of an of fensive remark to bis betrothed, which so angered her that she canceled the engage ment. This, It Is related, so preyed on Hope's mind that shortly after he sold the property to Samuel Morris. Samuel Morris was the eldest son ot Su sanna Morris, the eldest daughter of Robert aud Susanna Heath, who came to Philadel phia with Wiluam Penn in 1701. Susanna Morris was a noted minister of the Society of Friends, who made three journeys to Eng- luud to preach, during one of whu;h. In 1731, she was shipwrecked, notwithstanding that she was warned beforehand, it Is related, by turn) successive dreams of the comiug catas trophe. Samuel Morris, like must of the Friends of that time, In that section, waa a strong Royalist, even going so far. It is said. as to drive bis cattle to Philadelphia for the use of tbe British soldiery after tbe battle of Ueruiantown, rather than let the Americans have them. With him on tbe farm resided a niecu, Annie Evans, who fell tn love with and married Col. Alexander Anderson, a young American auidierol the revolution, in spite of the violent opposition of bar uncle. Uu the death of Samuel Morris tbe prop erty came into the possession of Joshua Mor ris, a brother of Samuel Morris, aud by him it waa sold to V) ililam Wast. He died in K!. April 17, 17M, the executors granted the premises to John VI Uoox and Joshua Em ku, to the use of James Horatio Watmougb for life. He was a geueral In the revolution ary army, and waa a grandfather of tbe wife f tlen Russell B. Thayer. After residing uu the property fur aotne years be rented It to tbe well known Steel family, of German' town, who lived there nine years, and he took up his rssidenoe on Price street, Ger mantown, where be died, Jan. 1S12.
