This statement one often hears in Califor
nia, especially in the touthern portion, and
it ia aoniewbat puzzling to tbe "tendorfoot."
It contain, however, the elemeiiU of truth,
aa aliuoHt every one who comes into southern
California through San Dixgo county passes
below the ocean level.
The Soutuorn Pacific railroad engineers

This sink, or old lade bed, is 130 miles long

region is one of great interest. In the sum

Still, sunstroke is never known in the sink,
owing, probably, to the low relative hu

there are many tbiugs to attract the attention.
Un its northern side are some fine date palms
thut have been growing here for ages, at least
beyond the memory or the oldest inliabitant.
They range from sixty to eighty feet in
height, and present a grand and p'icturesque

THE INDIAN IXHABITAVT9.

them. He considers them lineal descendants
of the old Aztecs. Their religion includes

Many of their ideas resemble those of the

The Indians will tell yon that tbe sink has

there. In riding along the foothill country

the west of Riverside. The Southern Pacific
railroad runs aluncr its bed and from far
away looks like some uncanny monster,
