Ninifi of Cigars.
What people don't know about the vari
ous names applied to cigars would All a book,"
soul a Newcastle street cigar dealer to a
Brunswick (Ga.) Turn reporter. "I have
heard men laud perfect, to the skies, as
though tbe word perfect,) was a name or a
quality name. And again 1 have beard a
man say a perfecto was not a perfecto, be
cause it was different in flavor from a per
fecto he smoked some time before. How ab
surd he was will Iw plain to you if you under-
:tuiM properly the signification of cigar
names. 1 he word perfecto is used to desig
nate tbe peculiar shape of sucb cigars. Work
men get more for making them than for mak
ing others, as it hi not so easy to roll the ma
terial into the perfecto shape.
For this reason a perfecto would necessarily
cost more than a cigar of the same material
but less difficult to make. But as far as the
word goes it is uaod ouly to indicate the shape
I the cigar. Besides words used to designate
the shape we have words which refer to size.
Sucb words are fluas, grandes. Of the terms
applied to shapes I may cite Trabucos, Lon
drea. Conchas, Reina Victorias, Pantatelas,
K-galiaa these words being plurals. The
language, you see, is Spanish, and tbe names
were tlrst applied by tbe Cubans. Words
which indicate size and shape are Infantes,
applied to tiny cigars; Princesses and Ele-
gautes. Combinations of size and shape give
sucb names as Conchas Finas, Conchas Sps
ciules, Londres Grandes, so that in two words
you have the shape and size indicated.
A Smart Letter.
A good story is told on a promineut Third-
street clothing firm. Looking over their
books they discovered an account of lone
standing. "Write him a saucy letter," said
the junior member to tbe bookkeeper. ''Yes,
make it very strong," replied the senior. The
bookkeeper followed instructions and penned
the followmg: i our account is past due.
If you do uot settle w itbin ten days we will
(irnw on you at sight.' This letter was
handed to the fljm.
"Do you think that that Is a smart letter I"
asked one of tnem.
"It is a business one," said the bookkeeper.
"Well, I dont think so," replied the former.
"Give me your peu and I'll show you the
way to do it," and be proceeded to write as
"Who bought my goods? You."
"Who promised to pay for them t Tou."
" W bo didnt do so I You. "

Not a Truthful True.
Professor True, of the National museum at
Washington, in an article on tbe habits and
natural history or tbe whale, undertakes to
demolish the Biblical story of the swallowing
of Jonah by saying that the throat of the
largest w bale is only three and a half inches
iu diameter. "Jonah," he ssys, "was a very
small man if he made tbe round trip through
whales throat." rrofessor True is evi
dently uot familiar with the Scripture. It
is nowhere related in them that Jonah was iu
the least familiar with a "whale." The nar
rative reads: "Mow the Lord had prepared a
great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah
was in the bally of the fish three days and
three nights." It is ui order, if Professor True
wishes to continue bis Scripture measure
ments, for him to ascertain tbe sir- -f the
tbruat of the fish which was prepared. Hart
