Thia list assertion did not seem to afford the
mun with the black bulge over his eye any
alarmiug amouut of satisfaction. But he
took the address of an artist highly recom
mended by the gruff voice, which sounded as
if it belonged to a professional bruiser, just the
same. It was the old story bit hia eye
against the door in the dark, and couldn't get
anybody to believe hiiiL So he finished his
ride and got off the car aa noon as It had
emerged from the tuuneL He found the
addrpsa furnUlied him without much trouble.
It was in a basement on Randolph street,
almost within a stone's throw of the court
house and u-xt to a Chinese laundry.
HOW UK BEGAN.
"Ye," saiil the black eye artist, very seri
ously, "it is rather a queer trade to follow.
You , I'm really a landscape painter by
profession. Hut when I struck Chicago a
v.-ar ago, out of pocket an.l without any Ix-lv
to say a good word for l lie. 1 found that there
wasn't much lanlscae to paiut here anyway,

was nothing for me to do, and I soon got
down at the heel. One day, while in the
Slifruian house, a fellow raised a row and
gave the mau who stood neit to him a bat in
the eye. The nun who got slugged, a re

'What in thunder shall I dof he said. 'I am
a solicitor, and I have got to hustle around
on the street and in the offlceaof business men
every day of my life. I cant show myself
the way I am.' 'Come with me,' I said, TU
aoon fix you out all right.'
"And I took him to the studio of an ac
quaintance over on State street, borrowed a
little bit of sienna, some white lead and a drop
ot cinualar, mixed it to suit the man's
natural complexion, and then I it it on
pretty thick under the eye. That made him
look like his own v!f. excepting a trifle baggy

told him t- come hack next morning and have
a new layer put on, and I thus treated biin
with oil int for a week. He paid me $3,
which just made me solid fur a week with mv
hoarding bouse frieud, and I've stuck to the
calling of Black Eye Artist ever since. My
first "iiatient.' the solicitor, brought me lots
of cn-tom. He seut all his business friends

in turn spread the glad tidings, and thus I've
made a comfortable living ever since more

THE WAT IT IS DONE.
Here the artist interrupted his flaw of lan
guage for a moment to attend to the optical
ncsls of his "patient." He used a palette and
a score of little oil paint tubes, just like the
other brethren of his craft, and he skillfully
mi. I quickly prepared his mixture, keeping
the face exposed to the light, and comparing
uotcs with it a few timea. Then he began to
paint. At first he laid on a sub-coating of
o l r about the hue of sunset in a fog. Then
as that had dried, he began to rub in the
li-ht brown and paint, and he varied the
shad.s so as to correspond exactly with tha
ci.-mni suimoU beneath. It was a hizhlv
creditable effort, worthy of tbe brush of
Michael Angulo, and with a fldtdtty to nature
wlii. h was truly amazing. After be had put
u the finishing touches ha put the man's hat
n so that its shadow cast tba mourning eve
into additional gloom, and thus attired the
latieut looked just as he had before ha ran
against that door in the dark.
'Fifty cents, please!" he said, and bis pa
tient gava him tha money with great haste,
remarking that it was a very reasonable
charge. Then tha artist cautioned him.
"llon't smile any more than vou have to" be
said, in a warning voice, "and above all, don't
laugh: Tbe paint aa It dries alightly con

queried the reporter.
