Tbe process of dime making is an interest- me. lhe silver bullion Is first melted nud run into two-pound bars. These in turn are run through immense rollers and flattened out to the thickness of tbe coin. These silver strips are tbeu pasted through a machine wiiii-h cuts tliem into round discs of the ex act dimensions of the coin, ready for tbe presses, the strips first having been treated with a kind of tttllow to prevent their being sci nulie.1 in their passage through the cut ters. Tiie silver blanks are tbeu put into the feeder of tbe stamping presses, anil are fed to tbe die by automatic machinery at tbe rate of 1U0 per minute 4M.0UO being turned out iu regulur working days of twilve hours. As the Miiinitli blanks are pressed between the ponderous printing dies they receive the lettered and figured impression in a manner similar to that of paper pressed upon a form of type; at the same time tbe piece is ex tended iu a slight degree, by which tbe mill ing is formed on its rim. Tbe machine drops the completed com into a receiver, and it is ready for she counter s hands. The instru ment used by the counter is not a complicated machine byaur means, as one might suppose. It is a simple copper colored tray, having raised edges running across tbe surface at a le-taiu-e about the exact width of a dinia From tbe receiver tbe money is dumped on t lie board or tray, and as it is shaken rapidly by the counter tbe pieces settle down into the spui between tbe ridges. All tbese spaces bumg tilled, tbe surplus com is brushed back into the receiver, ami tbe counter has exactly I, J. silver dunes, or t li, on the tray, which number it requires to fill tbe spaces. Tbe trav is emptied into the boxes, and the money n then ready for shipment. Tbe dime doer not pass through the bands of the weigher. does the coin of a larger denomination. One and one-half grains are allowed for variance or "tolerauce" in all silver coin from (1 down, and the deviation from the standard in tbo case of the ten cent pieces is so trifling that tbe expense of weighing tbe coin of this denomination la dispeused with. Whenever I tackle a plate of beans," said the advance agent as be leaned bark in bis cliuir, "my alleged mind and memory revert srasou I put in with a road show, otner- oircus, traveling by wagon. One Sat- y af turuoon I dropped into a little town I'ulled Sarcarappa, in the state of Maine. T1iit was but one hotel iu the place, and not having the entree to the society columns, as it were, 1 placed mvself beneath its roof. When supper time arrived I was seated in the dining room ere yet the costless landlord bail ceased to agitate tiie bell that called the vie tun. to feed. The persecuted beiress that piloted the provender asked tne if I would have ka. I realized the hopelessness of my a!, and said I would. Biie retired, reap- l-ured, and placed before me a dish of hot Uaus. a plat of bread and butter and a cup of Utu. tine Sunday morning I broke my fast n ull a boiled potato, a cup of something, and Mime cold beans. "Oil City Bliz r.ird. How a Toad Removes His Skin. It is safe to say but few people have ever lu fortunate enough to catch a toad in the act of changing bis skin. A man who professes to have been an in terested eye witness to such a transaction de scribe the novel operation as follows: I ob served bun pressing bis elbows against bis sides and rubbing downwards. His move ini iits were so singular that I resolved to find out, if possible, what ha was up to. After a few smart rubs bis skin began to burst open along bis back, "rtow," said I, "old fellow, you have done it, but be appeared to be un concerned, aud kept ou rubbing uutd be bad win ked his skin into folds on bis sides and bius; then, graspiug one hind leg with b fure paws, he pulled tbe skin from tbe leg slick as a mau would remove a pair of pants; then stripped the other bind leg iu the same way. He next took the cast-off portion of bis cuticle and pulled it forward between bis forelegs until he could catch it in his mouth, whereupon ha forthwith began to swallow it; then, by raising and lowering bis bead, swallowing as tbe head beut forward each time, he stripvd off tbe skin underneath until it came to bia forelegs. At this stage of the curious proceedings he ftraaped one of the forelegs with tbe opposite paw, and by much pulling stripped oil the skin ; changing hands, he stripped the other, and by a slight motion ot tbe bend, all the time swallowing, he drew it from tbe neck and swallowed the whole. Tbe entire operation occupied but a few minutes of time. St. Louis IlepubUc ADV10 TO auTHIKS.
