It waa a very melancholy looking home,
rith a consumptive a.s't presumably eu
(iiidered by long perioU of aemi-starvation,
tml when it fell duad suddenly in the shafts
if an ash wagon opposite tha (Uiit offico
rly yesterday momiiiK, the colored man
who drove the cart did not evince any mark-
d surpriw. A policeman who was paning
pwmpea ror a moment to ln8ect the corpus
and then went into a shop on the corner to
ring up a telephone. Ten minutes flew by,
and a man with a businesslike air and a large
wart on his nom made his way through th
little crowd that surrounded the dead ani
mal. The ash man be addressed briefly in a whU
prt and presently handed him Ave silver dol
lars. After eyeing the money for a few sec
ond with the air of one consoled for a mis
fortune, the ash mnn put it in his pocket and
walked off, probably to borrow another horse
for the purpose of dragging the w agon home.
As the crowd broke up a philanthropic pedes
trian remarked, with a sigh, to the person
with a wart on his now that the poor beast
was to be congratulated upon having finished
his career of usefulness in this worliL The
mnn with the wart grinned, and replied that
'.he unfortunate creature's usefulness, far
from being finished, had only begun,
THE DRAY WITH BIG LETTERS.
The philanthropic citizen did not under
stand the meaning of this response, but he
would have comprehended it better if be had
waited a minute or so more, at the end of
which a heavy dray was driven np alongside
he lavement, and two men, with an inclined
!)latie of boards and rope tackle, pulled the
dead borne upon the vehicle ami drove away
wnn it. trie bystanders noticed that the
dray was marked in big letters with the
naineof such and such a Arm, "manufacturers
of Miiwrior fertilizers."
This, then, was to lie the deritiuy of the de
ceased quadruped. Unlike the egg;that chirM
at breakfast, it had not survived the period
of its usefulness. It would live again in the
rruiu and dowers and waving grain to which
it mi-ht contribute the elements of growth.
AftT aw hile the dray came to a stop in
front of an ugly looking building on the Po
tomac bonk at the other end of Georgetown.
The men did not hold their noses, but that
was liecause they were used to the very un
pleasant smells which thicken the atmosphere
of the locality. Tha carcasa was unloaded,
and having been conveyed into the .budding
was hoisted to the second floor. There an
expert oierator set to work upon it sfith a
keeu knife and quickly removed the entire
kin, the portion covering the head and tail
include!. The flayed animal was then cut
up into six parts, w taich were thrown into a
hit; iron kettle with a steam jacket and boiled
four hours. At the end of this time the big
l n., kiosened from the flesh by cooking,
were separated from the mass of meat with
rake for sulneqtient grinding np into bone
fertilizer, which Is very expensive, but con
tains elements that restore the nutritive
l.er to the soil in a wonderful manner. For
w henms fertilisers made of tlosli produce a
g.sid effect which is merely temporary, the
ground bone suppliea the apietite of the
hungry haun in a way that really lasts. Ni
trogen, carbon and lime, which it so largely
contains, are marvelous growth producers.
GRIXDrKO BIM TO POWDER.
P.ut, as was about to be said, the flesh and
little hones, after the big bones had been
U.ken out, were put under a powerful press,
big enough to accommodate half a ton, and
squeezed until nearly every particle of water
and grease has been forced out of the tissue.
Then the mass was placed In a steam drier
with two jackets, beneath which steam was
continually flowing around, and after a while
it camu out dry as a chip. Not a bit of greas
or moisture, in which the elements of decora
vHtiou are propagated, remaiued, and the
residue, after being ground up fine in a sort
of mill, resembled Lone Jack tobacco more
than anything else. It had no offensive
smell, and the reporter was informed that it
ould last indefinitely without exhibiting a
sign of decay or change. In this form, put
up in bags, it waa ready for the farmer an
excellent fertilizer, though by no means
equal to ground bone. It is much cheaper,
Aud now, presumably, you are under the
impression that you know all a boat the post
mortem history of a horse. By no means.
You have not yet been told that his skin goes
to Philadelphia or New York and is made into
I asu ball covers. Nothing so tough aa horse
hide, and, therefore, so well adapted to that
purpoee, has yet been discovered. The faair
of the mane and the tail is the best possible
material for a curled hair mattress. The
hoofs are ground up into the finest gardeners'
fertilizer known, and the moat costly ot all
fertilizers, owing to the difficulty of grinding
them. The result is called "hoof meal," and
iu value from tha gardener's point of tew is
largely owing to the presence in it ot a great
percentage of ammonia. Very likely, how
ever, the hoofs may be utilized in the manu
facture of an excellent quality of glue, or it
may be that the chemist will adapt them to
the various uses of his own, among others to
the making of that axquialte color of Persian
blue. Besides, the hair may be uasd for hair
cloth and fish hues, and the bones for animal
charcoal and buttons. Washington Star.
