Those who are net Wot dmen are puz
tied to know what to be ieve and what
not to believe of that wbi:b they bear of
tbe squabble between Heal Consul Root
and Head Physician McKinnie, of the
Modern Woodmen of Atienca, for the
affair is largely a personal matter between
those two men men wl om the order
trusted, and who trust 1 each other
once, but who now are tell ng each other
that "lou re a nuther, thete now!
Woodmen well, they dc n't know what
to believe, either, yet many t think that
the order should get rid oV both of these
And now Secretary of 8 ate Pavev. of
Illinois, after a careful icvestigation of
the books of the order, has turned the
matter oyer to the attorney general of Illi
now. who is gome to brine suit "probab
ly at tbe February term if tbe circuit
court in Morrison." Aeainst whom suit
will be brought is not stated.
Tbe secretary of state is said to have

dulent death claim, 'quite h number of ir
After reading the article from which
the above is taken, the Fulton Journal
"Hon. J. C. Hoot, head codsu! of the
Modern Woodmen of Am u-ica, was seen
Monday in regard to the above matter,
and treated the affair very lightly. He
seemed to have no fear hin self or for the
order so far as a suit by the attorney gen
eral was concerned.
By the way the Maul ami Wedge is out
again with more fac simile letters of the
bead consul, and many me re "proofs" of
"irregularities" in the roan inemeot of the
order. And the Echo it has also been
received for December, an 1 it contains
"many refutations" of mat y "irregulari
ties," and still no man kniwetb, or does
not telleth, who Amanda Iiernum is or
"who struck Billy Petterso a." The Xev
hat seen one of the Lyons gentlemen who
was in the head consul's office when
Amanda Bernum came afier tbe money,
and be says: "She was tall, quite heavy,
eood looking, dark hair and eyes, and
was not dressed in mourning or in
marked manner other than to have crape
on her bonnet."
X Amanda! Amanda! Wbere arc you?
Come back and all will lie 1'orglven.
Another evidence of inconsistency to
say tbe least in the management of the
affairs of tbe order was tbe taking of tbe
printing of the Echo fron. the office of
the Lyons Advertiser to Ch cago in order
"that it could be printed more rapidly
and issued earlier each raoalh," tut in
the course of events the Echo has worked
itself back to tbe Fulton Journal office to
be printed. A new engine is put in, new
type is bought, and Clinton subscribers
across tbe river get their j.apers eleven
days after they are dated.
The Clinton Newt concludes an extend
ed review of these, and other facts as
One thing the Newt does not believe is
policy, and that is exaggeration. In the
Echo is an item which says the "head
consul has recently addressed large meet
ings at Lyons, Clinton, Davenport." etc.
Of the others tbe Jteifj dies not know,
but the Clinton meeting was anything
but a "large meeting." Ttere were not
over thirty Clinton Woodrien present,
and some ten or twelve from Fulton and
Lyons who came down lo see the Xein
get "done up." They saw it. They saw
everyone of the Clinton camp act tbe
gentleman, when entertainirg visitors, at
borne. As to the "big mi-eting," there
was not more than oneseventh of the
membership of the camp present, and
then the presiding officer wss not present
and but two or three f tl e prominent
members of tbe order, and they all were
notified that tbe bead confnl was to be
present at the meeting. Thi Neict makes
this statement not to reflect on tbe popu
larity of the head consul, but to show
how the present editor of the Echo
writes. If all tbe Echo is as accurate,
what must we believe? Liws sakes, it
is not unusual to have a Itrger attend
ance just to adopt a strange r.
And still tbe order booms, and many
new members are greeted, tod it prom
ises to spread till it numbers 1 IK), 000
members, if it can eliminate wme of these
mal contents and get oflcers against
wbom do cnartre of lobbery :an be made.
Again, the Aeie would lil.e ta see Mr.
Root get out from under th.s cloud: yes,
ana -prove nimseir innocent, whether it
be a principle of law to do to or not."

The announcement of the return of tbe
Howard Big Burlesque company served to
crowd the Central theatre latt night until
there was hardly standing ro m. All the
old favorites, including May Howard and
Harry Morris, were heartily received in
the specialties, and the beautiful art pic
tures presented between each of the acts
were loudly applauded aid evidently
In addition there was some pleasing
ballad singing, artistic dancing and a very
clever sketch to conclude with, called
the "O Home-in Stead." Philadelphia

The transition from long lingering
