A. M. McMein. editor of the Qaiocy
Whig, after tolling of the way that town
hu been doing street paring and making
other improvements, tells of one thing
that was done there toward getting a
good healthy moTement engrafted upon
the town. In a recent Interview he spoke
as fellows:
"We are going into paving quite exten
sively. We began about four years ago
and have already pared about three miies
of street with brick and hare at least an
other mile to put down this spring. The
street we hare pared lhas far are in the
business portion of the city and we had
bo difficulty in getting the consent of the
property owners. We are greatly pleased
with the brick and will ne it exclusively
as a paring material.
"Qnincr hts taken on a new life in the
last tew years. The difficulty for awhile
was that we had too much wealth and a
conservative element that would not do
much good for the city. But receotlv the
young men determined to take things in
their own bands. We are now paving,
putting in electric railways and engaging
in other enterprises that are bringing the
cUy right forward.
One interesting fact in the develop,
ment of Q'lincy was the organization of
a syndicate of young men to buy land to
lay out in town lots. The first thought
was to find 100 young men who would
subscribe f 100 apiece and buy a tract of
land for that purpose. At the first meet
lag that was beld 60 of these shares of
$'.0 each were taken, and the remaining
40 were alt quickly subscribed, and a
number of other young men who hud not
been present clamored for membership in
the company, and so the limit was re
moved, and I believe there are now about
150 members of the company. The re
sult has been most beneficial to tbe town.
They bought a tract of land on the edge
of the city, surveyed it and laid it off in
lota, and what is tbe result? One hun
dred and fifty actire, pushing, energetic
young men are talking Qiincy from
morning till night. Tbey talk it to our
citizens snd to everyone whom tbey can
reach. ion can imagine the effect of
IV) zealous agents of our community
They think Qaincy, dream Qjincy
talk Quincy. and work for Qainry
There was one piece of ground which
they bought, which I believe contained
about four acres, and tbey divided it op
into son. e here about two hundred lot
My impression is that all these lots, pos
ibly excepting three ot four, have been
oid and built upon. Tbe property wa
near Highland Pnrk on tbe line of one of
the street railways. At the first annuo
meeting of the company there was a dir
idt-oa on tbe stock of about 10 per cent.
and the question came np what to do
with it. It was tbe unanimous decision
to add it to the principal and invest in
more land, lou see no roan had a grt;a
deal at stake, and by working together
there is every prospect that they can
make a good thing for themselves out of
tbe speculation and at tbe same time do
a good turn for tbe town in which tbey
live. It made all these young men feel a
special Interest in ljuincy.
