As soon as all the steamers are in ser
vice there will be a daily line between
St. Louis and Keokuk, and three boats
eich way every week between St. Louis
and St. Paul. With a good Binge of wa
ter throughout.lhe season the companies
promise belter service and accommoda
tion than ever before.
The Lihbie Conger passed down the
river. She took a large manifest of
freight from this agency. The boat
shows where she has been the last two
years. Anyone who has steamboated ou
the Missouri river could tell that the Lib-
hie Conger had been there. She does not
have the bright, clean, inviting appear
ance which has made the Diamond Jo
line craft popn'ar. These latter boats
look like floating water lilies in their
fresh white coat of paint. LaCrosse
Tbe new steamer, the J. W. Van Sant,
which was inspected last week by Cap
tains Monaghan sod Cbalk, of Daluth,
Minnesota, and pronounced A No. 1, is
one of the best rafters ever built. The
low water of past years has demonstrated
that light boats must succeed the
heavy ones now in ferrice, and this boat
proves that such boats can be built, as
she will draw but twenty-four inches with
kit and fuel for a diy aboard. In that
rtspeet she will be a success. She be
longs to the Van S int Musser Transpor
tation company, and Captain Sam Van
Sant. president of the company, named
the boat after his father, who is a Scott
county pioneer, and who has been en
gaged in the building and repairing of
steamboats on ihs upper Mississippi for
moie than half a century. Captain J. W.
Van Sant, although past the rips old age
of eighty, made the model, and actively
superintended the budding of the boat
that bears his name.
Th boat will be commanded by Geo.
Trombley. Jr., assisted at the wheel by
Isaac Spinsby and Charles Barnes, mates.
The engines will be in charge of James
Feran with El. Blair second. William

A necessity of Healln.
It is a prime necessity of health that
the action of the bowels t-hmild be kept
regular. But the way to overcome a
temporary nt of constipation, or to rem
edy chronic cosliveness, is not to delutre
be stomach and drench tbe bowels with
purgatives of violent and painful action.
The happy medium between inoperative
and violent cathartic is Hostetter's stom
ach Bitters, which acts just sufficiently
upon the bowels to relax them without
pain, and which being a wholesome tonic,
as well as unenent. has the effect of
strengthening both them and the stom
ach, and promoting the well being of tbe
whole internal economy. The removal
of bile from the blood, increased activity
of the liver, usually dormant in cases of
costiveneFi, and sound digestion follows
tbe use of this beneficent medicine, as
thorough and genial in its effects as it is
safe and pure in composition. Rheuma
tism; fever and ague, kidney troubles and
debility are also remedied by it.
