Ktl;;raM uml Clover.
Professor V. J. Deal sends a warning
to farmers, in form of a bulletin from
the Michigan State College station, about
rihgrass or narrow leaved plaintain,
which is liecoming common in clover
seed. While it is not the worst of weeds.
the seeds are dimcuit to peparate from
those of the clover, and when present in
jure the sale of the clover s-ed. lie

plaintain. buckthorn plaintain has a e
rennial root, a rosette of narrow leaves
six to ten inches long, acute at each end,
an angled tlower stall; one to two feet
high, Ijcaring a ( lindi ical spike of
flowers. The shining seeds are brown,
oblong, convex on one si.ie, concave on
the other. The leaves usually spread
close to the ground like those of the dan
delion and thus exclude other plants.
The stalks are slender, without leaves,
and afford little fodder. Careful farm
ers who read this notice will do well by
calling the attention of their neighUirs
to the subject and help keep libgrass out
of their fields.

Broilers for market should la? made a
matter of business and care. It is desir
able to get the chicks out as early as ja
sible, as the very lirst spring chicks com
mand enormous prices; but this does not
Lift long, as the price will get to alout
twenty-five cents a pound and stay there
for awhile. The cost of raising the chicks
is only four cents a pound. Suppose 500
chicks were raised. At this rate the cost
would only be 50(1 times four cents, or
$00, while the price they sell for is 500
times twenty-live cents, or 123, which
leaves a clear profit of 105 for the trouble
of raising them; and of course when
larger numbers are raised the profit is
still greater. The prices are higher dur
ing March and April, when chicks that
weigh less that a pound retail at forty or
fifty cents, but along in July the prices
get down to twenty-live cents, but even
such prices as this make the business
very profitable and well adapted for all
classes of people. -Southern Planter.
