Special Correspondence to tbe A rocs :
Bellone, Ky., May 25. My work
about the old battlefields in the rear of
Richmond is now completed for the pres
ent,and you my be sure that I am glad to
get into the Kentucky mountains after
being Btationed in the (.hickahominy
swamps in Virginia. The old earth
works that still exist as they wire left, in
many places show tbe terrible and des
perate energy of the confederate army in
thtir efforts to prevent their supplies
from being cut off and keep their rail
tohiIs in working order. The Chesapeake
& Ohio and the Richmond & Danville
railways were all there was to keep the
people of Richmond from 81 ar vat ion
when Grant was wroking in their front,
atid Lee's right rested on Uordonsville, a
station on the C. & O , and at every
bridge and crossing for a hundred milts
out show the remains of where their ar
tillery was planted on both of these rail
ways. And these old settlers tell me that
when Sheridan made the "sneak" on them
and tore up these bridges and bent and
twisted the rails and pitched I hem
in the rivers and creeks and burned
all their county bridges, that settled
it, and the "Yankees" had worn out
all their soil by treading on it so that
they bad never bi en able to raie
more than a half a crop ontheltnd since.
Some of these old settlers have no pars
ticular love fur a northern man yet, as
they hi ill mourn for the gooii old times
when their was pleuty of money in the
poekets of the blue bloods of Albermarle,
Hanover and Iouisa counties before the
war, as the most profitable business then
was in raising negroes to sell to the cot
ton states, as those counties had the reps
utaiion of producing a superior breed
that brought a belter price in the south
ern market than those raised in any
other part of Virginia.
But the educated gentleman of the old
setiool is invariably polite and social as
far as his means will allow. He still
wears a plug hat anil cloves, and sits on his
poor old horse as straight as an arrow,
and still tries to support his dignity not-
withstanding his poverty, aod a mean
