Cheap Fences for Poultry Yards Fences
Made of Wire Netting at a Compara
tively Cheap Coat anil Fences That
Can Be Readily Moved.
At this season it often is an important
matter to keep young chickens within
certain boundaries. Fences that are
cheaply constrncted and 'which may be
readily changed from one spot to another
are, therefore, of Fpecial valne to the
keepers of poultry.
A very effeap fence can be made with
wire netting 4 feet hi,"?h vnd fastened in
position as follows: Buy 2 by 8 inch
scantling, 10 feet long, and cnt into two
pieces, or get Btakes of any kind and
(sharpen the ends; then start a hole by
striking down into the ground with a
crowbar and working it back and forth
to widen the hole, when the stakes should
lye driven in a foot or more and be set 6
feet apart.

for the purpose. This will leave a little
more than 6 inches of the wire netting
(which will tmpport itself) alove the
upper horizontal piece and the tops of
the stakes, so that if a hen flies for tho
upper lath she will strike tho wire and
be thrown back. It will, however, be
found that the bird's attempts to get out
will all lie mode lower down and through
the wire which seems to present no ob
struction nntil thev try it. To move a
fence of this kind, of xnrse, the wire
must lie taken off and the stakes pulled
np and reset, which can all be done in a
very little time. While the fence seems
a frail one, it will, nevertheless, stand a
very hard storm, as it offers very little
resistance to the wind.
An ill tistr.it ion and directions for
making a movable fence that can be still
more readily changed from one place to
another is given by Stoddard in his little
look on -Poultry Architecture." This
fence, as showu in the second cut, is
made in sections, and can be quickly set
np, and can lie packed closely and laid
away when not in nse. The lengths are
12 feet long and the fence 5 feet high;
the pickets arc laths, sawed a foot longer
and a quarter of an inch wider than usual;
but common four foot laths are often
used, and exccjt for high fivers, like Leg
horns, are good enough. .

SECTIONAL FENCE FOR MO VINO.
The object in using lath is to secure
lightness, and for the same reason the
posts are 5x1 1-2 inches and the rails and
braces are 1 x3 inches. In constructing
it the horizontal rails should be nailed to
the posts outside, and the pickets fast
ened on outside tho rails, when the diag
onal braces should lie nailed on outside
the pickets. The fence is to be set up
zipzag to secure a wide base and prevent
falling over, and the ends of the lengths
are to be fastened together with coarse
twine or wire. In locations where strong
winds may lie expected a few proiw or
stakes driven down in the corners may lie
neeild. In locating fences for confining
fowls reference must lie had to the hen
nery and their nsual roosting places
when practicable, otherwise a temporary
roost with a rongh ehed roof will lie
necessary.
Testimony la Favor of Itnrks.
There are many advantages in raising
dncks, one of which is that on a small
place where you wish to have a garden a
very low fence will keep them inside of
their own lot. They grow quickly and
are first class table fowls, are less liablo
t disease than chickens and will lav as
man- eggs. If provided with good shel
ter and feed they will lay early in Feb
ruary and continue on regularly until
Lite in the spring or early summer.
When quite small they need attention,
but after the feathers make a good start
they can lie let run and, with the ex
ception of being fed and watered, they
will need but little care, luey are re
markably good foragers, and if given
the run of the orchard or gTass lot will
pick up the greater part of their own liv
ing. . They should have comfortable
quarters and plenty of watt for drink,
but a pond or running stream may be
dispensed with, as they will thrive quite
well without eitlrer. Hie 1'ekin la one
of the liest varieties, on account of its
size and color, and the feathers may lie
picked during the summer. Ducks, how
ever, should not lie picked during their

In large pastures animals are liable to
graze off some places very closely and
leave others to run to seed. It is a good
plau to Tkio movable fences and with
these pasture small portions at a time.
Another good plan is to keep a mixture
of animals, so that one kind can follow
another. Slcatter the droppings of cattle
or else there will spring up bunches of
tall grass. To prevent patches from go
ing to seed mow them, a small quantity
at a time, aud give the wilted grass to
stock. -
