southern hot-heads wlio are calling; upon

Democrats in Was-hinnton. Almost evt-ry
southern senator or representative of any
prominence has leen interviewed, and a
lnrt;e majority of them say that the talk
of boycotting is nonsense. The.se men are
as earnest ns ever in their opposition to
he bill, and are still of the opinion that
it if an outrageous insult to the south,

Policy Influence Some.
Senators Gorman and Vance are out-
poken iu their opposition to the boycot
ting programme, and such radical south
erners as Duller, Colquitt, Call and others
are very chary of expressing; an indorse
ment ot Governor Gordon a sentiments.
It is true, however, that some of the lend-
rig southerners in both houses, including
otie or two of those above quoted, while
being at heart in favor of the boycott.
deem it very unwise to agitate the subject
laifore the determination of tho senate is
Solidifying the Kepnbl leans.
They feel convinced, too, that the bill
could never be practically enforced ow
ing to the existing conditions of society in
he eolith. They very much regret, how
ever, that some of the southern paers and
southern statesmen are indulging in such
inflammatory talk. The more conserva
tive and thoughtful southern Democrats
in Washington have lietin an active aud
concerted movement to head off this talk
of boycotting, and so far they have en
isled iu their ranks almostevery southern
K-mocrat of any influence or power. These
meu think that it is such talk as is Ihmiii;

Northern Advocate of the ltnycott.
Jsoiue of the most eager advocates of
boycotting are congressmen from th
northern states and an earnest effort is le-
in made by the cool-headed men from the
south to restrain their ardor, knowing
that all'talk of southern retaliation only
strengthens the hands of the Ucpulilicaus.
