But Could Not Stand the Early
Howl of Whistles.
A ItrKalb County Editor'. Imp rr
nlon. of the t'lty i'iae Compliments
and Mild l'ritlrlHmH...lavrnport
The editor of tbe DeKalb County True
Republican came down from Sycamore last
week to attend the Woodmen convention
and when be returned home be wrote up
bis impressions of Rock Island in tbe fol
lowing entertaining style:
Rock Island is a bandsome city of about
15,000 people. Its location on tbe east
ern banks of tbe Mississippi affords fine
drainage and tbe streets are all well paved
witb tile and brick and nicely kept. Tbe
visitor is always interested in tbe many
historical spots about tbe city, and days
could be pleasantly passed in visiting
tbern and in examining tbe United States
Arsenal, located here, with its buildings,
its soldiers and tbe many instruments of
war tbe paraphernalia for an army; for
in times of peace a ereat nation, like ours,
must be always prepared for war. While
tbe city itself is a handsome one, and
abounds in many beautiful sights made by
tbe band of man, it would be hard to find
a line of railroad in Illinois that runs
through more picturesque natural scenery
than tbe passenger on a Chicago, Mil
waukee & fcU. Paul train sees in the thirty-seven
miles journey from Fulton to
Rock Island. Tbe road for tbe entire
distance lies so close to tbe river that
the father of waters is almost constantly
presented to tte admiring view, flowing
so placidly through its broad woodland
banks on to tbe gulf. Making tbe down
trip in the evening, just after the sun had
sunk behind tbe bluffy bills, the scene,
even with the passing steamers so bril
liantly lighted, was not as beautiful as in
the morning, when, homeward bound,
we caught the full beauty tbe nun
added to the scene, as, rising over tbe
eastern bills, into tbe sides of which
hundreds of miners were delving for
dusky diamonds, it painted with its flood
of light tbe dark green foilage along the
shore, or boldly kissing the rippling wa
ters as they coquetlahly darted over tbe
rapids or moved slowly onward to the
deeper channel. Through glen and dale
we swiftly glide with nature's painting on
every hand, and we proudly think that
though other localities and other coun
tries may present sights of greater grand
eur, few can furnish landscapes of more
Rock Island is a lively place. It has a
score or more of manufacturing enter'
prises. In this it is unfortunate. We
speak advisedly wbeu we say nnfortu
nate. for every one of the shops is
equipped witb tbe Haiah style of chime
wbiBUes, and therein lies the trouble
Thu tired traveler who good naturedly

Tbe chime whistle sounds nicely in
DeKalb where it has nothing lively to
work against it, and it can whistle tbe
musical notes of its chime in three-four
time at 7 o clock, but, wbea tn an
enterprising town like Rock Island, with
the very air filled with life and activity,
tbe chime whistles are all blown in six-.
eighth time, and every one commences
to get in its diabolical work at 5 o'clock
in tbe morning, and to the utter disgust
of the traveler blow their sleep destroying

Just across the river from Rock Inland
our party found a handsome city in Dav
enport. It claims a population of 30.0OU
souls, and just bow many people without
souls we did not learn, but, being located
in a prohibition stile, with tbe strongest
kind of prohibition laws surrounding it.
the fact that 365 saloons ran wide open.
many or them both day and night, would
indicate that there was a large element in
that city with something sadly lacking in
their general make up. One not an eye
witness will hardly realize tbe open man
ner in which all of tbe saloons arc run
ning in violation of the law, and under
sanction of tbe city authorities, for, as a
friend in that city informed us, the city
recognizes the open saloon and imposes
a "business license" of $25 upon each
one. Davenport has clean streets, elec
tric street cars, electric lights, paid tire-
department and excellent systems of
waterworks, except that the water sup
ply is bad. Tbe water is taken unfiltered
from the river and is so dirty and impure
that it is not at all delectable to the
tastes of the uninitiated. Were the
water better, perhaps so many people
would not drink beer.
Our business in Rock Island was to at
tend the convention of Woodmen. The
meeting was a successful one in every
particular, and tbe delegates were all im
bued with a stronger faith in tbe order,
and, by resolution, and otherwise, ex
pressed their determination to be on band

early whistles, well pleased with Rock
