The Clinton (Iowa) Age has learned a
valuable truth when it states that tbe
"Illinois laws are iron clad, and when
they get after a man be bss a weary time
of it, or when a party of men are under
its eye, the law is no more lenient." The
Tbe Woodmen matters, which the at
torney general of Illinois bas brought in
to court, are nearly nation wide now in
importance, the last move, of the Illinois
officers being to come to Lyons and bring
i tie law powers wttn mem to take addi
tionai testimony frr the state case against
tbe bead officers or tbe prder.
Illinois law thus permits tbem to go
before any notary public in any state to
gather testimony, so they appeared yes
terday before it. I. Spence, and among
otners sunpoenaed, called Uashier Holmes,
of tbe Lyons national bank, to bring hia
record in Mr. Root's business into the
presence of Mr. Spence, it is said, mainly
to trace up tbe payment of alleged fic
titious or overcharged bills, and presum
ably to investigate tbe Burnam draft.

. Iaatraet Theaa.
After charming the little princesses of
England, daughters 'of the Prince of
Wales, and hosts of the children of the
nobility of England, Barnum & Bailey
are going to cause a llutter in the hearts
of the little folks of this city, by bringing
their European show here, and what a
wealth of wonders and: embarrassment of
features Barnum & B Hey have collected
for exhibition in th'eii greatest show on
earth this year! The vonder is, not that
they exist, but they can crowd so much in-.
to their tents and show them all in one
day. Cages, steam musical chariots and
others,wild beasts.horst s ia the horse fair,
trained animals, herds of elephants, hip
podrome races, three aire us companies,
two- menageries, aviarv, 1,200 perform
ers, an army of emplcves, and, in fact,
everything that money can buy.
Besides all this, thelmre Kirally's ';Nero,
or the Destruction of Rme,w undoubted
ly the most instructive, as well aslhe
grandest spectacle, ever produced; famil
iarizing the mind of the youth of the
country with thecustons of old Rome;
with Arabian horses, arrie, dancing girls,
religious articles, and nil accoutrements
and paraphernalia belonging to the days
of glorious Rome; four trains of railroad
cars, etc ; more in resliiy than was ever
exhibited before in any country at one
time, all of it new, bright., rich and grand
and the tone of the wliole pure, moral,
and conspicuously clean. Barnum &
Bailey have certainly a treat ehow. and
they are both grent men, as well as be
ing the benefactors of li e public and the
teachers of the children.
Their whole individuul shows will be
here on Friday next, 8et. 19th, and the
great free street parade takes place in
tbe morning at "9 o'clock .
Beyond doubt the most dazzling event
of tbe year will be viewel by thousands
of people the night of Tuesday, Sept. 23.

hundreds of boats and wnter craft will
appear together with tbe largest display
of fireworks given in the v est. Tbe Mis
