The above from the Rock Island Allocs
certainly meets with the approval and p

course there is liable to be rivalry between
the two cities, but. let ns throw aside all

as the "Ii;ver Carnival " a (Iny of n joic

time, but for all time to come, let ns see
to it that no bad feeling exists. Let us.
as citizens of the two heat cities in the
Mississippi valley, show to the world that
we can dwell lo .-ether in nt.iiy and har

the peaceful serenity of our lives, but let

Notwithstanding the caustic utterances
of the Union with regard to the Rock
It land bridge these are facts: Gest kept
the bridge closed between this city and
Davenport thus compelling everyone
who wished to use it to take the ferry at
an unnecessary outlay. This was in
jury to theworkingman, to the merchant,
. the iahufacturer and the shipper or re
ceiver of goods generally. The people of
this city jtitioned tin war department
to have these restrictions removed when
Captain Robinson wrote to Oest to have
him prevent such action, and was an
swered that Gest bad attended to the
matter by doing what was asked of him.

Mr. Gesfs constituents could with
good grace forgive him for his silence
while occupying a seat in the councils of
the nation "silence is golden." and
Mr. Gest's silence taken by itself is
rather to his credit if Mr. Gest had ac
complished something while in Washing
ton tdat he might be justified in asking
a re-election. If tie had had the
courage to record his vote against
a bill which he knew perfectly
well was a gross injustice to Ids
constituents, he might now with
propriety seek an endorsement at the
hands of those constituents. -Whether he
has made speeches or not cuts not the
least figure. He has made an utter
failure so far as representing this dis
trict is concerned. He miirbt well ask a
re-election of the millionaire manufac
turers of the east, but not ot the people
of the west. Moline Riitl'ictn .
