Mayor and members of the Council of the
City of Rock bland: Gentlemen: tpon
the evening of Jan. 1. 1 submitted lo your
honorable body informally gathered at
my house for that purpose, a proposition
to erect as a memorial to my father, tbe
late P. L. Cable, an! for the benefit and
use of tbe citizens of Rock Island, a Al
tering plant of sufficient capacity to meet
the dally needs of tbe city.
I asked of you, and unanimously you
agreed, that this Rift should be protected
against a possible futare sale of tbe
waterworks, that in tbe event of such a
sale it should revert to its donor.
Tbe heartiness of your assurance that
my wishes in this regard were your own
is not only a source of ereat satisfaction
to me, but it leads me to believe that ibe
accompanying ordinance, most respect
rally submitted, will not meet with ills
approval by your honorable body. Very

Also an ordinance relating to the water
supply of ibe city of Rock Island, and
moved that tho donation made by Mr.
Ben. T. Cable be accepted and the oidi
nauce adopted . Motion carried and ordi
nance adopted by unanimous vote.
Alderman Scbroeder moved that hearty
thabks be extended to Mr. Cable by a ris
ing vote of the council. Council rose
unanimously. On motion of Alderman
Larkin the clerk read a remonstrance o. a
msjority of property holders against the
building of a sewer on Twenty fourth
street aad vicioitv now under construe
lion and Mr. S. W. Searle was Riven per
mission 10 adiln sa the council in behalf
of the petitioners. City Attorney Haas
waa also requested to ttate tbe status of
the case ami the legal points in tbe con
troversy. On motion a recess was taken
and tbe city attorney instructed lo pre
pare a repealing ordinance.
On reassembling of the council the
clerk read an ordinance repealing an or
dinance relating to the Twenty-fourth
street sewer, passed Marcb S, 1890. On
motion of Alderman Bchroefler the matter
was referred lo tbe sewer and finance
committee, to report at tbenexi meeting.
Alderman Heller offered a resolution
directing the street and alley committee
to erect a r iling or fence oa the west
side of Ninth street near the Methodist
church to guard against accidents, which
Alderman Ev. ns moved that the city
marshal be instructed to notify Messrs.
Marshall and Ferguson to put down a
sidewalk lo front of their property, corner
of Third avenue and Nineteenth street,
opposite the Y. M. C. A. building.

soon ils the butter is ready for the market.
by the ordinary method of cleansins find

When the barrel is full a cloth is nicely
spread over and tni-ked round the roll,

The object of the salt on tha top is to
keep the butter tiht in its place, and to
make tood the deficiency of any brine
