The farn;era may eij)ect to pay higher
prices for barbed wire iu the near future.
The barbed wire trost has made an ar
rangement to buy certain patents from
the firm of Washburn & Moeu, of Wor
cester, Mass., for $400,000. A Chicajjo
member of the trust gives an outline of
the trust's future plans. He says: "Man
ufacturers not Tneuilr of the pool will
be asked to pay a rather stiff price for
the privilfpre of nsins? the patents now
controlled by the pool. We can charge
$125 per ton if we want to. This simply
means that a manufacturer not a mem

A correspondent writes: "You Bt&te tbe
ease very mildly as to the English origin of
tbe so called slang pbrane, 'too thin,' whica
perhaps isn't a slang phrase stall. The
fact is, it is English from 'way back.' In
Smollett's 'Peregrine Pickle' tbe hero in
forms Emilia that he is going abroad. Thus
brings tears to her eyes, but be says they
are caused by tbe hot tea which she is
pouring. Which leads the author to re
mark that tbe excuse was 'too thin' to im
pose on her lover. The phrase is also found
in Shakespeare's Ilenry VIII, act 5, scene
2, with the bamc meaning." New Ycrk
