The Bell of Hokoit.
No single object within the walls of the
Kremlin at Moscow, that citadel and city
within itself, attracts the stmnger with
more interest than the fame us King of
Bells, which is said to have been cracked
in the furnace, and now lies at the foot of
the tower of Ivan.
A large piece is broken from the side, but
it still weighs about 190 tons, for it is over
VJ feet in heisht and more than CO in cir
cumference. When it was ca.t in 1733. by
order of the Empress Anne, the gold, silver
ami copper consumed iu the operation were
valued at nearly half a million dollars.
The casting took rlace, accompanied by
religious ceremonies, and royal ladies vied
with each other in throwing tl e gold orna
ments worn upon their persm into the
great caldron of molten metal. Doubtless
this very generosity of contribution served
to impart brittleness to the material. -Youth's
