Inland and the Wrst End Fac
tories. It is tumored that the Chicago. Bur
linpton & Q tincy railroad company is
making another effort to get a stub
through - from its main track north to
Sylvan Island. It will be remembered
that they were prevented from doing so a
year or so ago by the interference of
property owners on First street, Moline,
who did not wish to see their residences
rendered, ss they held, practically worth
less by a track tunning wiih'm a few feet
of their doors, even though the Moline
city council had granted the right of way.
The exciting episode is well remt mbered.
how women, girls and children joined in
the opposition and assisted by the
Rock Island officers, succeeded in
frustrating an attempt of the railroad
gang to lay the trick during the
night. Since then tbe Burlington
has seemingly abandoned its enter
prise, but it has not been idle by any
means. The company is now seeking to
get across the tail race by another route,
but whether they will do so remains to
be seen. The Water Power company
could tjive them a right of way easily
enough, and one would think it would
be to their interest to do so. but it is un
derstood that they do not wish to have
any of their land spoiled for residence
Bites. The Republican says:
As it is now the C. R I & P. has
things all its own way in ihe west end.
The C , R. I. & P. does all the switching
botu for itself and the Q and rharxes the
latter a dollar for every Q enr it switch
es. The C, It. I. & P.'is quite iadepend
ent, too, about promptness in moving
C,B & Q. cars. The result is quite
detrimental, especially to the Moline Ice
compnnj's and Mr. Senlueter'i business.
The Q , because of tbe switching fee,
makes the same rate betwten Moline and
St. Louis that it does between Savanna
or Dubuque and St. Louis. As the Q.
hauls ovt:rnve-sixiLs of the ice and stone
hat leaves Sylvan Island, it is plain
to be seen that Moline industry is the
loser by this deal. There are about
26,000 tons of ice on Sylvan Island, and
at least 18 000 tons of this will be shipped
south via the C , B. & Q . the coming
summer. Now what is wanted is a rail
road bridge over the Uilrace, so thatcsr?
can be loaded at the houses on the is'.an t
instead of the ice being conveyed across
the wagon bridge by teams as is now
done, involving considerable time and
expense that places Moline at a disad
vantage with competing points. It is
learned that if the Q. folks can get a right
of way f the'tailrace they will endeavor
to get permission to build this bridge,
and it is not improbable that if they suc
ceed in doint; this they may ultimately
be permitted to cross to tbe arsenal.
"Robert Emmet "
The members of the Schnell club will
repeat Robert Emmet at Harper's theatre
Friday night for the benefit of the Indus
trial Home association. The popular sat
isfaction which attended the first presen
tation of this patriotic historical drama,
together with the object for which it is
again to be given, should attract a laree
house. A particular feature will be Tim
Collins' specialties si new. Seats may
be reserved at the Harper boute phar-mtcv.
