The Davenport Business Aien's asso

nepin canal question and the opposition
which has been raised to the established
route, the idea being, if The Argus is
correctly informed, to ascertain if there is
reasonable ground for the charges that
have been preferred by ex Congrf ssman.
Gest against the engineers in charge Of
the work, and if on the strergth of such
representations the operations should be
delayed or hampered or whether they
should be pushed forward to tLe comple

either way, so that the canal reaches the
Mississippi as the bill provides, "at or

Thk Arqcs believes that a careful in

association the fact that there can be
counted on the Angers of one hand the
people in Rock Island who are seriously
opposed to the line as determined upon
by the civil engineers True it is to be
sure, as oft repealed in Thk Argcs. the
route on the north side of Rock river would
have been more desirable to Rock Island,
but the people here are not dispose 1 to

work so far progressed. Or, to endanger
the measure as a whole by raisin? a howl
because the southern route has been sc

canal, by the most feasible route, not that
it may afford opportunity for the unload

chance to pass, on the government at
fabulous prices, but that it my prove, as

The only really great tented exhib ition
we shall have in our midst this season will
be the Adam Forepaugh shows. In the
past, extending over a perion of almost
a generation, this magnificent exhibition,

worth is warrant for its w lcome." Evs

"good things shou'd te praised," and

Saturday morning Fred Meyer, who was
laid up all last winter with a broken leg
received while assisting in setting up a
boring machine in the Maline Plow com
pany's blacksmith shp, met with another
misfortune. For some time he has been
employed as foreman of a garg of men
making excavations for the basement of
the company's new building and for its
tunnel across Fifteenth street. Shortly
before noon he was standing near the ex
cavation for the tunnel when some of the
men threw out one of the ties that had
been removed from the railroad track
running across to the foundry. The tie
struck on a stone and flew around so that
it came down on top of Meyer's foot, he
being unable to get out of the way on acs
count of his lameness, as he is still
obliged to walk with the aid cf a crutch
and cane. He received severe bruises on
his foot and leg, and was taken to his
home' by one of the men. His injuries
were dressed by Dr. Sloan and he will
probably be Iaaid up some time.
