THE UNION DEPOT.
Growing Confidence in the Great
Project.
A Fabile Convenience Rsek Island
Shoold Surely Have and
That Moon.
GEO. F. 30TH,
at Jack son A Burdt. office.
-Keep that union depot project alive,"
said a citizen in the Harper to an Argcs
representative the other day. "Keep
hsmmering away at it. There is a
groitR feeling of confidence in the ulti
mate success of the central depot idea,
and I believe the time is cot far distant
when Rock Island will have such a public
convenience. Every day this city is
larger and better off than it was the day j
before, and evefy day that it grows, the
increasing need of a union depot becomes
more apparent. - If you will stop for a
moment and consider, you will find that
tbere are few cities the sizs of Rock Isl
and so well provided with railroads lead
ing in all directions. In addition to the
advantage of the 'Great Rock Island
Route' which has carried the city's name
to the four corners of - the earth,
and is giving it more fame
every year and ever? day, there is the
Milwaukee & St. Paul, the C, B. &.Q .
and last but by no means least, let me tell
you, the Rock Island & Peoria all of which
bring hundreds of people into this city
daily and what do they want to do with
them? Dump them down in the most
out-of-the-way places possible? Look
at the Rock Island depot, a mile and a
half from our business center. Isn't that
a shame? To be sure the 3 minute elec
tric cars on the Moline lines give us
ready means of transit to and from the
depot during the day and until 10:30 at
night, but this is not all we want. Not
only are there late trains coming into
Rock Island on this road, but tbere is
good reason why it is to Rock Island's
advantage that the trains on this import
tant road should come iato tbc business
part of the city, and a union depot will
bring about such results after the viaduct
is completed.
men look at the C, B. & Q , with
its depot away off on the river bank, at
tnj foot of dark street. What kind ot
an impression does such a location make
oa the mind of a stranger coming into
the city? I know the Burlington desires
a belter location in this city, where it
d jes a good business, and between which
road an.l the city there is such a cordial,
good leeling.
The location of the C M. & St. P. is
be:ter, but look at the depot! There is
no doubt an enterprising road 'like the
Milwaukee would prefer more desirable
depot accommodations in Rock Island,
but the company probably realize the
inevitable fact that there is to be a union
depot here some day and does not there
fore, care to invest lavishly in a depot
building which it is likely at any time to
abandon,
"Taking a candid view of the situation
the R. I. & P. has the only good depot
building anywhere nearly properly located
in the city, and I don't believe our own
little R. I. P.' wou'.d object in the least
to a union depot terminal in Rock Island
where it could make better connections
with all the trnnk linc9, such as it does
at the Peorls end."
DIGFAKMEIiS' PICNIC.
WESTERN WATERWAYS.
An AtHoriatlen f..r the IMttcmeion of
Kiver Improvement to be Invited
to Davenport.
The committee of the Western Water
ways association is sending out to the
various members circulars in which they
are asked to give their preference for the
next convention of the association, to be
held sometime before congress meets.
It has been suggested that the association
be extended an invitation to hold their
next meeting in Davenport and in carni
val week. The matter will probably be
brought before the Davenport Business
Men's association at its next meet
ing Monday night. Conventions have
been held in Cincinnati, Memphis, New
Orleans, Denver, St. Louis and Kansas
City and now it is really Davenport's turn,
says the Tribune, "especially when it is
considered that this city has been labor
ing unceasingly for s many years for the
Hennepin canal, one of the greatest
waterwajs improvements in the country."
It is to be hoped that the Business
Men's association will extend a cordial in
vitation to meet here, and in carnival
week; and that the invitation will be ac
cepted. The various members of this
association would enjoy the carnival, and
besides tbere are so many points of inter
est in this vicinity for them to visit. They
would have an opportunity of seeing
where the Hennepin canal will empty
into the Mississippi.
While Rock Island would like the con
vention and could entertain it nicely, it
would not be apt to evince a disposition
to deprive Davenport if that city has
spoken first. Nevertheless if Davenport
does succeed in getting the convention it
can count on Rock Island's assistance in
aiding in the entertainment of the dele
gates and other visitors, for no city is
more deeply interested in waterways than
this, and no city has labored more zeal
ously, more persistently and more con
sistently for the Hennepin canal than
Rock Is.and.

tee or the Farmers' Institute Ar-rang.-.
The executive commiitee of the Rock
Island County Farmers' institute in pur
suance to a call which had been issued,
met at the court house at 11 o'clock this
morning, for the purpose of making the
arrangements for an institute and picnic,
the following gentlemen being present:
D. W. Little, C. H. Dibbern. H. O'Haver,
Louis Jahns, Thomas Campbell, S. M .
Heath, Hiram Darlibg.George W.McMur-
phy and Joseph Fitzpatrick. Hiram Dar
ling was cboBen chairman, and Louis
Jahns secretary, after which the best
manner of making it a success was dis'
cussed at some length, acd it was finally
decided to ho'd the institute and picnic
on Big island, near Milan, on Tuesday,
August 25, and that all would put forth
their earnest efforts to make it a de
rided success. It was thought expe
dient to appoint a committee of
five on arrangements who would have
the whole matter in hand and would also
look to the appointment of other commit
tees to look after each minor detail. The
chair appointed as such committee; Jo
seph Fitzpatrick, ot Milan, chairman; D.
W. Little, of Pre-emption; Louis Jahns,
of Moline, George Vv . McMurphy, Hills
dale, and W. S. McCullough, Edgington.
It was also decided to secure Gov. Fifer,
if possible, as speaker, after which ad
journment was taken.
At the conclusion of the above meeting
the committee on arrangements held a
mating at which T. S. LUvis and How
ard Wells were apDointed a committee to
correspond with Gov. Fifer, inviting him
to be present as speaker. D.
W. Little was appointed , to
look after the music. Louis Jahns
and W. S. McCullough were selected to
make arrangements for seats, G. W. Mc
Murphy was delegated to look after the
priming and Joseph Filzpatrick was up
pointed to adveitise for bids for the sale
of tLe st ;ud piivilcges and arrange for
the grounds, after which D. W. Little,
W. S. McCullough and L. S. Pearsall
-were appointed to make arrangements
with the C, U. 1. & P., R. I. & P. and
C, M. & St. P. railroads respectively, for
carrying people to and from the institute,
after which the committee adjourned to
meet whenever it was thought necessary,

Scarcely less foolixh is the practice of those who
fly to violent physicing for costiveaess. They

so that, verily, the last condition of such people

which also promotes a healthy secretion and flow
