"Kalanka" PrtwniM la Kock. Island

A combination ot spectacular extrava

lar comedy is wfcat may he en in "Ka
janfca" as presented at Harper's tbea're
last erenioir. Tliis famous Parisian pro
duction was givei in Rock Island minus
many of its best scenic effects, because
as C. A. Miller, one of the proprietois.
said, the stage wmld not accommodate
some of the test pieces. "Thst pile of
scenery in the lower stairway," said Mr.
Miller before tie opening of the theatre,
"we cannot use t might because there is
not room back of the tceoes. The news
papers ought to advocate the lowering of
this theatre to the first flaor and that will
afford better accommodations for the
audiences as well as for the proper and
eucjesiful presentation of attractions de
pending as ours dots, largely upon its
scenic tffects. We will give our enter
tainment at a grent disadvantage tonight
because of the fa ilts I mention. There
should be a remecy in this theatre or else
a new play house Rock Island destrves
and will support, the best attractions on
The play was fairly well mounted last
evening despite the disadvantages under
which the management contend d. The
magic room in the second act, after the
nature of a scene from Hanlans' Fantas

leatures, wntle in the third act there
were some very pr.-tty and neat tmnsfor

piece displayed lavish, expenditure and
exquisite taste. The Mariposa dancers,
in beautiful satin skirte, appeared in the
third act, and to describe what they did
in the way of whirling, twisting, deft
raising of their sg-irts, would require
much space and a thorough knowledge
of the terpsichoreaa art allied to that of
the modern London stage. They were
Simply amazing, and the audience was
iu ecstacies. Mile. Bertoto, a young
t rench girl, in her change dances, ctea

Marlini'!", French acrobats, were very
fiue, active as monkeys, and doing the
most rtmaraable acrobatic feats with the
greites'. ease. The fun makers in this
act, as in fact all through the piece, was
Charles Ravel, as c'orrn. He is acrobat,
athlete, luggler and p&ntomimist, atd
since the days of George L. Fox has no

seemingly made of utta-percha, and re
ceived rounds of ap jlause for his acro
batic contortions. The last act was given
over to pantomime, and proved to be a
means of pleasing tl.ose who had seen
such in childhood, and cannot fail to de
light. The singing was not what it
should have been, but this was chargei
able as much to the orchestra as anything
"Little Tiixie," a comedy of the high

which gives it interest which is held from

making all the way through. There are
a number of fine specialties incidental to
the action of the d iy. ' Little Tiixie"
