Swindling a Texan.
Major Sumpter McBride is a Texas
gentleman, who ha been spending the
summer in New York. A fe,w days ago
he went to the landlord of his hotel in a
state of great excite Bent. He said:
"The rascality ttmt goes on in a big
city like New York is just incredible,
and the way strangers are taken in is
perfectly scandalous. I've been here
three weeks, and v ithout knowing it 1
have been swindled every day."
"How did it coiae about':" asked the
"You see there is a lemonade stand
near the hotel, and every day I've been
getting one or more glasses of lemonade."
"Wasn't it real lemonade':''
"The lemonade itself was all right.
I'm not complaining of the quality of
the lemonade, but the way the fellow
who sells it gouged me."
"How did he come to cheat yon?"
"Easiest thing in the world. Von see
he has a sign np, 'Lemonade, three and
five cents.' That means if he squeezes
half a lemon in the glass it is three
cents, and if he squeezes a whole lemon
in it is five cents. I didn't know this,
and the man who keeps the lemonade
stand, seeing that I was from Texas,
asked me eight cents, and when I kicked
he pointed to his sign and said, three
and five are eight cents, and I've been
paying eight cents for a three cent glass
of lemonade ever s nce I've been in Xew
York. 1 didn't fin I out my mistake un
til today. If I ha 1 him out on a Texas
prairie I'd make a rersonal matter of it."
The Wish t of the Fish.
A number of nun stood in front of a
railroad office in Clark street, looking at
on enormous ii.uskalloiige, which,
stretched on ice, served as an advertise
ment of the road's tishing gronnds. One
of the men, glancing at the card which
announced the weight of the fish, said
with a sneer:
"Thirty-five ponnds! I'll bet twenty
dollars it doesn't weigh thirty-four.
Anybody want to take me up? Do you?"
he added, speaking to a young fellow
who came out of tie office.
'Do I what?"
"Want to bet oa the weight of this
" What's the use of betting on it? The
card tells how nine h it weighs."
"Oh, 1 know wh it the card tells, but I
want to get at tl e real weight of the
fish. Bet twenty dollars it don't weigh
"All right, I'll gj -on."
The money was put up. The fish
weighed forty-five pounds. When the
defeated man was -jon, some one, speak
ing to the winner, said:
"Yon ran a big risk."
"lot much. You see there are a
number of fellows who go around dis
puting the weight of 'railroad fish,' and
are eternally want ir:g to bet that they
will not weigh i s much as the card
states, and they don't, as a rule, but 1
fixed this one. Tiie original card gave
the weight at futy pounds, but exact
ing a sharper along, I changed it." Ar
