ntrni. It is now dtt nied possible in the ec
clesiagtictil circle that John Lincnater
Spalding, Disbo the R iman diocese o
Peoria, which includes Rock Island, may
bs cnnstiiuted bishop of Brooklyn, N.
Y., sajs the Peoria Journal. This pro
pored change is not as yet fully and of
ficially announced, but there is room to
believe that it may ere long be consum
mated. The higher authorities
of the church are the court of final
appeal io such matters, and
their ultimatum is awaited with keen in
terest and not a little anxiety in this
community. Bishop Splitting is an ex
ceedingly popular man. He is a useful
citiz"n in a countless variety of was out
side of the church d main . The bishop
is public-Bpiritt d, and has always taken
a keen interest in public advancement.
The erection of the cathedral chutch of
St. Mary. Peoria, is a crystaliziii in of
his energy caryed in sione. The bitbop
is now improving in health, and it is fen
erally hoped will remain at the head of
th? diocese of Peoria.
Father Mackin, pastor of St. Joseph's
church, was questioned last nigbt as to
the prospect of Bishop Spaulding leaving
the diocese of Peoria and stated that while
it was possible that such a change might
be made be did not think it was probable,
for whiln the honor may have been offered
the bishop, be might decline it, as he had
always been sati fled with the Peoria dio
The bishoo was offered the arch
bisbopbric of San Francisco a few years
ao by the pope, but declined it.

A Vneant Seat.
There was jnt one vacant seat in the
street car and two women came hurry
ing and bustling in together and stood
la-fore the nnoccupied seat.
"Yon sit down," said one of the ladies
generously, waving her hand toward the
"Oh, no; yon take it."
"No, I'd rather stand."
"So would I."
"On, take it. I've been sitting nearly
"So have I."
"But 1 really don't care to sit."

"But yon look tired. 7
"Oh, I'm not a bit Now yon sit
"No, no, yon. I get off first."
"Then you ought to sit down now and
I'll take the seat afterward."
"But I really don't care for it."
"Neither do I."
"Please take it."
This joes on until both women try to
sit down at the same time and one of
them sits in the lap of the weary look
ing young man, who jumps np and goes
out and 6tands on the platform, thus
making room for both women, and the
tormenting dialogue comes to an end.
