A Tale r Western Life.
Peter Nelson, a Swede, was on his way
thrrnii;li the wrxils of upper Michigan,
when ho met will, it peculiar adventure,
lie ha J a horse and bnckboanj anil was
armed with a iuc hester rille. While
joRKing along he heard a noise In the
bushes and stopped to investigate. A
short search discovered two bear cubs play
ing. Thinking he would like to capture
them alive Nelsou tried to seize them, but
they ran away. elson started in pursuit,
throwing aside hit rifle us he-ran. He suc
ceeded in headiug off one of the cubs to
ward the road, when he heard a crash be
hind him, followed by an angry prowl.
Turning, he beh ld to his horror the
mother of the cubs. All thoughts of the
cubs vanished; he thought only of his own
safety. Ileranfo- the road, and reached
it just in time to s . his horse make a mad
dash up the road.
His only chance now was a tree, and for
tunately he "shit tied up" one that wa
large enough to sustain his weight, but
too small for the b .uir to climb. However,
the bear made many desperate attempts to
reach the man in t tie tree, who now wished
that he had not th-own away his rifle. To
add to his distress smoke began to fill the
air, and he realized that a forest fire was
approaching. Presently burned leavesand
cinders fell in the tree, and Nelson could
stand it no longer. The bear and her cubs
were underneath t ie tree, where the smoke
was not so thick. Opeuinghis pocketknife
the man slid down the tree and started to
run. He would hi ve escaped, as the bear
followed in a slow, half hearted way, but
he stumbled and Ml. As luck would have
it he fell on his Winchester, and when the
bear came up he was ready for her. Two
shots finished her. and then he killed the
cubs. By this tim ? the wind shifted ;md
the unlucky trave er proceeded on foot to
his destination, wl ere he found his horse
and backboard aw titing him.
