FAMOUS AMERICAN BELLS.
A I'retty I.eirnd About the Old "Slave
Be 1" The Oldest real.
The subject of Ik-Us hits always been a
fascinating one and a favorite with poets
ana romance writers. Our own Ixintr
fellow wrot-) no less than nine poems on
this suiijec: , among them "The Belfry of
jsrues,' "j he liellsof Lynn," "The Song
of the Hell," "The Bolls of St. Bias" and
' The Bellst f Atri." There are a good many
1h-11s in Ani.-rica with a history and more
or less le-ei: lary lore connirted with them.
A writer in The Christian at Work., from
which theavtimipanyingcut is reproduced
makes some niiere.-nn statements in re-

nna. A stri iiili; point of resemblance be
tween the 'V lave bell" and the liberty bell
in the fad that e;ich has a fissure in the
side. Couctrniiii; the fissure in the slave
liell n pretty letrenu is related:
The bell stood in the center of the plan
tation and v as pealed to summon the force
of slaves to i.nd from their work. Early in
the morniti;; its elaiiKintr roused the ten

and at event nle its silvery notes announced
that the hour for rest had come. Faith
fully did th bell perform its duty till the

tion proclamation was sounded through the
land. Then the heart of the bell broke for
very joy. A : all events, a fissure was found
in its side th-.' very next day.

PE:L OF DELLS AT ST. ATCl'STINE.
Apropos ol the CetitenniaJ exposition, it
may lie addec that a immlier of interesting
bells will be on exhibition in Chicago in
1SU3. One of - hem, now in the city of Wash
ington, is sai 1 to have once hung in the
tower of a church built by Columbus at
Lsabella, Santo Domingo, the first Euro
pean settlement in the New World.
Probably the oldest peal in America is
one of four bells hanging in the quaint
belfry of tin Spanish cathedral at St.
Augustine, Fla. They bear the date of
16Si. Another old bell is the property of a
Catholic church at Kaskaskia, Ills. It
was presented to the parish by King Louis
of France, in 17 U. The largest bell in
America is the one in the Cathedral of
Notre Dame, at Montreal. It was cast in
England in 1M7, and weighs 13)4 tons.
It is said the largest bell ever made in
this country weighed 22,000 pounds, and
before it was fractured hung on the city
hall in New York. On one or two occa
sions this bell was heard up the Hudson
river thirteen miles in the night, when the
city was comparatively quiet.
The chime in Trinity church, New York,
is probably the best in the country. The
largest bell of the little group in Trinity
church was ci.st in 1845. Grouped around
it are other liells, decreasing regularly in
size to the sm illest, which weighs scarcely
100 pounds. Vhese lesser bells are well
worth the looking at. "In good old colony
times" they ci-ossed the seas, eight of them
in company, a present from good Queen
Anne to her loyal subjects in the New
World, and it is recorded that they were
the first chime of bells whoe voice was
heard this side the Atlantic.
Love und liVeddinfr Ring.
Love and wedding rings are iatimately
associated; y.t Colley Cibber exclaims,
"Oh, how ma iv torments lie in the small
circle of a wtdding ring." Do you know
why the gold i-irclet is placed on the left
hand? Opinions differ, says a writer in
Cassell's Magiizine. On the one side it is
affirmed that a vein proceeding from the
heart to that finger is the cause: on the
other that it denotes that the wife is sub
ject to her husband. Napoleon I, when he
married his stcond empress, whispered io
M. Pradt's eat. "The Human law ordains
that all slaves should wear rings, and as
the women ar our slaves they ought to
wear t his badj. e of servitude." The little
corporal and the great emperor was not
given to weigl ing his words so far as po
liteness was concerned, it is more grate
ful to women to know that men ik a thou
sand grateful ways have demonstrated the
tenderness of t heir passion by "the giving
and receiving of a ring." Herrick sings:
And as this round
It nowhere found

A i endless prove
As pure as gold forever.
It was more t he fashion in old days than
now to engra' e a verse within the ring.
