Hollow Stay Bolts.
The rolling of hollow stay bolts is an in
dustry recently introduced and claimed to
possess special advantages, savs The Ace
of Steel. In this process two pieces of iron
rollitd in L -shaped section are laid together
and wired in that position, these parts be
ing then heated to a welding heat and run
through 'rolls, and as the welded tube
comes from the rolls it passes over a man
drel, which fills the interior; before reach
ing the second pair of rolls it cools slightly
and shrinks upon the mandrel, and in this
pair of rolls it is drawn from the mandrel
and the interior cleared. In this way, by
five repeated operations, a hollow stay bolt
is obtained which has a uniform interior
diameter. The material must necessarily
be the very best quality of charcoal iron;
the bolts are made in lengths of six feet.
and it is alleged that a considerable saving
in expense is made by using hollow stay
bolt iron instead of drilling the ends of the
bolt after they are in position.
What Is Steatite?
Probably no mineral has so many non
technical names as steatite, which is also
knewn by the appellations of soapstone,
pot itone and lardstone, and which is itself
merely a compact granular variety of talc
a soft mineral, soupy to the touch, of a
gre-inish, whitish or grayish color, usually
occurring in foliated masses and a hydrous
silirate of magnesia. Steatite can be form
ed into almost anything; beautiful Cre
pla s are made of it, and stationary wash
tubs and sinks are important products.
Not an ounce need be wasted, nays the In
dustrial World; the dust is used to adul
terate rubber goods, giving so called gum
rulbers their dull finish; and in paper,
too. it is used to give weight, while all
waste can be ground up into a flour, which
can be made into a fireproof paint for coat
ing the interior of mills or the roofs of
Taruble Lead Pencils.
A correspondent writing to The Manu
facturer's Gazette, says that by immersing
l'ad pencil in a jar of linseed oil until it
is thoroughly saturated lead, wood and
all it will be found that the lead has been
toi ghened and softened, and the pencil
wt 1 outwear two of the untreated.
The Long-eat Continuous Fiber.
The longest continuous fiber known at
th present time is that of silk. An in
da ttrial journal states that a cocoon of a
well fed silk worm will often yield 1,000
yaitls long, and In one instance one has
bet a produced which contained 1,295 yards
wi .bout a break.
Sell" Purification of Water.
rofessor Pettenkofer, of Munich, holds
thi there is no danger of sewage pollution
la the river if the volume of sewage dis

o ume of the flow of the river, and if the
enrage enters at a greater velocity, so as
to prevent banking tip.
