Aro No Returns.
Mr. Sjxrtcash sat in his private office.
There came a knock at the door and a
"Tha is Mr. Spotcash, is it not?" he
"My name is Ardnp Orville Ardup."
"W 11, Bir, what can I"
"Wt ll, I am the inventor of a device
that will require a little capital to de
velop it, but there is a big fortune in it,
and I lun willing to go shares with any
man that will fnmish the money. I
have omo to you first, because of your
"Skip all that. Come to business."
"Yet, sir. Briefly, Mr. Spotcash, I
have hit upon an idea which, if carried
into prictical effect, will prevent trou
sers f mm bagging at the knees. It will
absolutely and forever do away with the
"Hei r me out, Mr. Spotcash. The
reat disfigurement of masculine attire
today ii baggy kneed trousers. Every
tailor, very man of f;ishion, every per
son who has given the subject any
thought whatever will tell you the samo
thing. Witness the efforts made by
well dressed men to overcome this de
fect. ( )l)serve how carefully some of
them p ill up the garment at the knees
when they sit down. See what pains
others rake to retain the fore and aft
crease up and down the legs. Candidly,
Mr. Spotcash, do you admire creased
pants I beg pardon trousers':"
"Of course you do not. Four or five
years ao a man with a pair of creased
trouseri would have been blackballed
by any club and would have been steer
ed into a back seat by the usher at any
fashionable church as a second rate
chap who wore hand-me-downs. How
is it now? I know men personally, Mr.
Spotcas i, who make a practice of fold
ing their trousers at night and placing
them under their mattresses so that the
crease s iall be there in the morning.
Others put ironing boards or long wire
stiffeneis inside the legs of the garment
for the same purpose. But it doesn't
work, sir. It is only a makeshift. It
merely puts off the catastrophe. The
baggy knee is inherent in the garment
itself as now made. Mark xne I 6ay as
now ma le. My plan is to attack the
evil in the beginning to destroy the
possibility of baggy knees by making
the fabr.c of something that will not
"That is simply preposter"
"I leg your pardon, Mr. Spotcash. It
seemed so to me at first. But nothing
is insnrnountable to a man of energy
and resources. The idea occurred to
me at f'rst of fastening small elastic
rubber bands or strips on the inner sido
of the knees, but I soon saw this would
not do. Then I thought of the plan of
weaving the rubber into the cloth itself,
but this would be equally objectionable.
It would make the cloth wrinkle un
equally and look odd. Finally the idea
struck ue of having the fabric itself
woven i.iore tightly at the knee than
anywhere else, so it could .not give.
Yon see the philosophy (f the thing.
There is more strain at the knees than
any other portion of the garment. Make
it absolutely unyielding at this point,
and the piestion is solved. To do this
of conrs will require special machinery
applied t the looms now in use, and
this is w'tere the expense"
"But 1 Kik here"
"I know what you are thinking of
now. Y m are wondering why the rest
of the garment could not be shrunk in
making. -o it would expand more than
"I am not thinking of anything of the
kind, sir. I havo now given you five
minutes of my time and I have no more
to spare. Your invention or device,
"Ardup, sir Orville Ardup."
"Is impossible, ridiculous, preposter
ous and 1 here is no reason why this in
terview thould be prolonged another
minute. I have no money to invest in
any crack brained, nonsensical schemes,
"I had 1 bought of suggesting $10,000,"
said the c iller, "as a suitable amount to
spend in experimenting, but I am willing
to come right to bedrock. Will you lend
me $1.75 n the idea?"
"I will :iot, sir."
"Say a quarter of a dollar."
"If yon don't get out of here"
"Shall we say fifteen cents?"
"Yon needn't call anybody, sir," said
the visitoi , with offended dignity. "I
scorn to tlebase myself by any further
application. I shall not come down an
other cent I am now going across the
way," ho added, moving toward the
door, "to lay a business proposition before
the firm ol Gettup & Howell, and when
you see me again, sir, I shall probably
be riding in a carriage with a pair of
