Archibald Uimpman in Arcadia,
Gorgcoualy Colored Toucans.
It is more especially the Kaudv colora
tion of the toucans which renders them
most typical in many ways of the habits
and manners of the larger fruit eating
birds. Flower haunting and fruit eating
creatures, such as butterflies, humming
birds, cockatoos and lories, almost always
develop in the long run a marked esthetic
: taste for pure and brilliant colors, which
reacts at last through sexual selection on
i their own appearance.
. " l" ' oa-ir lotKi iiniong
Bright tropica blossoms or gaudy south
ern forest, fruits like mangoes and star
apples, these feathered .-esthetes acquire R
hereditary lore for color whir l, influences
them in the end in the choice of their own
brilliant mates, and so secures the per
petuation of the most beautiful and most
gorgeous of their kind by unconscious se
lection. And in this respect the toucans
are absolutely unsurpassed in the whole
range of nature: their large and richlv
colored bills, their delicate breast plu
mage, and their bodies generally, present
a variety of melting tints and contrasted
hues nowhere l ist, to be found in equally
Close display on any other animal. Corn
She Took the Trick.
There was a whist party one evening at
a North Meridian street home which was
attended by u number of society people
and some wbist players, one young lady
whose enthusiastic admiration of the game
was greater than her ability to play it was
paired with a continued whist plaver ad
dicted to the use of phrases. At one point
of the game when it was her play, and the
cards on the board indicated that a high
trump was desirable, her partner said,
"Now, don't send a boy to the mill!''
This was Greek to her, but when it was
explained she made the er.rroer nlan
I stored the phrase away in her memory for
future use. Later in the evening it was
her last play, and a high trump was neces

overspread her face as she triumphantly

He Was Dry.
"Take this seat, sir," said a lady who
was riiling upon a street carduringadown-
' pour of rain.
"Thank you," answered the man ad-dres.-cd.and
he at once sat down in the va
cant seat next to the lady, who was a
stranger to him.
Then lie began to fidget and smile, but
the lady took not the slightest notice of
him. She had simply out maneuvered an
other man who. in dripping wet mackin
tosh, was making for that seat. The pas
senger she had invited to occupy it was
dry, and she knew if the other one sat
down his proximity would ruin her Rmart
attire, which she so cleverly protected by
her little maneuver. Detroit Free Press.
Ancient littles for Carving.
Our ancestors fully recognized the value
of good carving, and many were the rules
by which a carver was expected to be gov
ern, 'i. Tlic ancient "Hoke of Kervyng,"
among other things, admonishes him to
touch venison only witii his knife and to
"set never on fyehe, Beach, beeste ner
fowle more than two fyngers and a
thumbe." Fingers lie was naturally
obliged to use, since forks were a luxury
of later date, and were not in private use
until James I's reign. Piers (iaveston,
the favorite of Edward II, had three silver
forks for eating pears with, but this was
regarded, no doubt, as a great and special
luxury. Kansas city Star.
Ianger from Incandescent Itulbs.
The danger of incasing incandescent
lampbulbsin readily inflammable material
is evidenced by fires recently reported.
Notwithstanding the popular impression,
an incandescent electric lamp gives out a
considerable amount of heat, and surround
ing its bulb with laces, tissue paper or any
such substances as are commonly used in
window displays, Without arranging them
so as to allow good radiation, involves con
siderable danger. New York World.

"Laying the board" for an Anglo-Saxon
banquet was something of a solemn func
tion; the usual hour was noon, and after it
was over the tables were removed and the
diners went, as an old chronicler observes,
"to their cups, to which the English were
too much accustomed." Evidently the rule
that the guests were not to bring their
arms into the hall, but leave them outside
with the porter, was no unnecessary one.
