There was an enthusiastic meeting at
Galesburg Tuesday evening in regard to
securing a right of way through that city
for the J. 8. E. railroad. Mayor Cooke
presided and presented the fact this road
would give them connections with every
trunk line in the state. It will help to
mke the city a railroad center. W. 8.
Gale said that grading between Havana
and Canton is w ell under way. It was
learned that three-fourth - of the iron to
build the road from Havana to Gales
burg has been purchased.
He thought the road would be of more
benefit to Galesburg on account of its
connections than any road they now have,
a statement that teems equally true in re
gard to Moline, Hon. Clark Carr, T. .1.
Hale, E. P. Williams and others spoke
and the enthusiasm manifested seemed to
indicate that the money necetsary to
secure the road would be subscribed verv
Monmouth is taking courage as Gales
burg fails to raise the money needed to
secure; the right of way and will, it is
said, make an effort to turn the road in
that direction . Canton wants the road
to run there, as it will connect several
thriving villages with that city, and thus
increase its trade. It i9 evident that
Galesburg will not have everything its
own way, but that if it gets the road it
must work for it.
