far distant when mothers will consider the real

did get here on time and they gave the
best minstrel performance that has been

Cleveland Minstrels are "not in it" when

to its fall. Tbe character of the jokes,
and there were a great number of them,
was very good. The absence of chestnuts
which is quite remarkable on occasions
of this sort was very noticeable.

would be a good one were these two the
only members of the company.

The Drain and the Stomach.
There is a very intimate relation between
the brain and the stomach. Thev must work
harmoniously together if the lest results
of both are to be obtained. ISrain exhaus
tion and continuous dejiri-ssinj; emotions,
such as worry and anxiety, almost always
cause derangements uf digestion 1V retard
ing the secretion of the fluids upon which
digestion depends. On the other Land,
food in insufficient or excessive quantities
or the injudicious selection of indigestible
food is frequently reflected upon the brain
and shows itself by sluggishness of thought
and diminution of mental vigor. The
brain and the stomach cannot perform
their functions to the best advantage at
the same time.
During the process of digestion the stom
ach requires more blood than it does at
other times, and a certain proportion of
this extra supply is drawn from the brain.
If, however, t he brain is forced to work
dnring the Jteriod of active digestion the
stomach will lie deprived of a certain pro
portion of the blood it requires. Activity
of the mind necessitates an increased flow
of blood to the brain, and as the power of
thought is to a certain extent controlled
by the will, while the process of digestion
is not, it naturally follows that when
thought and digestion are carried on sim
ultaneously the brain will always take the
blood needed by the stomach. If this is an
habitual occurrence it soon leads to pro
nounced dyspepsia, and chronic dyspepsia
in its turn, by irritation of tbe nervous
system, incapacitates even an .abnormally
vigorous brain from accomplishing its best
Some AbHiirdlties In Spelling.
Far be it from me to appear as the de
fender of the "American spelling" which
the British journalists denounce. This
"American spelling" is less absurd than
the British sjielliiig only in so far as
it has varied therefrom. Even in these
variations there is abundant absurdity.
Once upon a time most words that now
are spelled wit h a final c had an added k.
Kven now both British and American
usage retains this k in hammock, al
though lioth British and Americans have
dropjK-d the needless letter from havoc,
while the British retain the k 'at the end
of almanack ami the Americans have
dropped it. Ir. Johnson was a reactionary
in orthography as in politics, ami in his
dictionary he willfully put, a final k to
words like optick, without Wing generally
followed by the -niblick as lie would have
Alusic was then mnsick, although, even
as l:ite as Aubrey's time, it had been
miisique. In our own day we are witness
ing the very gradual substit ution of t i
logical technic for the furm originally im
ported trorn France technique. As yet,
so fur as I have observed, no attempts
have been made to modify the foreign
spelling of clique and oMiquo.
I am inclined to think that technic is ro

I say less slowly? in the I nited States
than in Great Britain. Brander Matthews

The excited tailor ran around the room,
the ball of fire playing about his feet. Snd
denly it rose above his head and moved off
toward the stovepipe hole in the ceiling,
which had a piece of paper pasted over it.
The bail moved straight through the pa
per and up the chimney. When near the
top it exploded and tore tbe chimney into
thousands of fragments. The sight of the
dehris left by the explosion showed the
family what would have been the conse

I desire once more to bear my testi
