Willow, where tho rushes erow
Softly swishing, sortly swaying.
Sine a music sweet and low.
While the breezes 'round you playing
Ucutly come gently go.
Wind that In the trees doth blow
With a sweet seductive sighing.
Sing a lullaby you know.
Dreamful as the shadows flying.
Something soft something slow.

Crooning song of no man's making.
Let mo ever seaward go
With no thought of sad awaking.

The Deathwatch Beetle.
There is a more or less clearly defined
thread of superstitiou running through
the minds of most people, and not a few
who have at various times been involun
tary listeners to the sound of unfamiliar
tickings, especially during the hours of
darkness, have been unable to prevent
their imagination leading them back to
the stories told them in childhood of the
dreaded omen of the tick of the death
watch, which precedes a death in the fam
ily. It is now well known that the ticking
is produced by an insect, anu a. mnsiau
chemist has not only taken the trouble to
investigate the subject ttiorougmy, Dut
has sent to a Paris paper two insects ac
tually caught in the act of producing the
sounds alluded to.
They were on the same sheet of packing

posite sides and at a distance of about four

inches apart, tjne strucit rorcioiy wim u
head at the rate of six blows per second,
and the insect on the lower side answered
as soon as the other had finished. The in
sect is a tiny beetle, barely a quarter of an
inch long. It is generally during the night
that it produces the ticking sound, and in
order to do so draws in the antenna and
intermediate legs, and resting principally
upon the median legs strikes its bead
against its support by a sort of rocking
motion. It is through this noise that the
male calls the female. Detroit Free Press.
France's Fanioul Nightingale.
Eossignol, the king of French detectives,
has probably the finest collection of scarf
pins in France. Whenever foreign royal
ties, on an incognito visit to Paris, desire
to see the slums of the capital, Rossignol
is always placed at their service. He takes
them over' the classical abodes of poverty
and despair; to the underground wine
shop of Pere Lunette; far beyond the
Quartier Latin, to the Chateau Rouge, the
resort of a very mixed set of people on the
slopes of Montmartre, or to some of the
most squalid among the public houses that
are open all night in the neighborhood of
Foreign princes have a strange liking for
these haunts of darkest Paris, probably
owing to the contrast to their own sur
roundings at home, and perhaps also such
an excursion is spiced with a slight appre
hension of danger. Their gratitude to
Rossignol generally takes the shape of a
scarfpin, and in some cases a decoration,
when the royal highness is from a country
where decorations are cheap. London
