ner." Verily, "Niobe," which the Amer
ican and English manaeers rejected,
when it was offered te tbtm by the
Paultons, wouM seem to have proven
the most popular and successful comedy
of the period. And when the manuscript
was rejected by such eminent builders as
A. M. Palmer and T. Henry French, less
persistent authors than the Paultons
would have given up the search for a

The farce-comedy fever is abating. Ii
l aged furiously two years ago and last
season there was a regular epidemic. It
is said that nearly 100 so-called farce-
comedy companies were organized and
went on the road last fall. The most of
them lived four or five weeks, a few sur
vived until Thanksgiving, and one or
two tried until New Years. The public
revolted at performances organized with
out rhyme or reason, and some of the
farcical mummers walked home. Then the
penny-wise pound-foolish dramatic critics
raised the cry. "farce comedy is dead.
The public is sick of it. The truth of the
matter is the public has not changed i's
taste in regard to farce-comedy at all,
and neither is farce-comedy that is
worthy to be called farce-comedy de
f unct. Good performances of this char
acter are just as popular today as they
ever were. "A Parlor Match" is now in
its ninth year, and Frank Dan it Id' '-Little
Puck," which comes to the Burtis opera
house Friday night is now in its sixth
season. There is no falling off in the
patronage of such comedies as these. In
deed, Frank Daniels appears to be mak
ing more money than ever. The reason
is he keeps his pctfoimance up to a high
standard, and always has something new
to present to his patrons.

The best-behaved ball player probably
that ever appeared professionally on a
ball field, says the St. Louis Globe-Dem
ocrat, is Lawyer Tim O'Rourke, who has
for years been with the New Yorks. Now
he is suspended in disgrace. Not one
person in a hundred who knows the in
side workings cf base ball will believe
that O'Rourke deserves this. He had a
difference of opinion with Manager Pat
Powers, and the latter released him
Then President Day of the
New York club, suspended
him "for undignified con
duct toward the manager. " The fact of
the business is, that Day knew well some
other club would jump at the chance to
sign O'Rourke, who is one of tbe best
players in the country, and hastened to
place him in such a position that this
could not be done; hence the suspension
before tbe 10 days' notice of release ex
pired. It is actions of this kind by the
magnates that is making the public lose
interest in tbe national game and the
domineering tactics of the St. Louis ball
president and the Chicago captain are
contributing to tbe same end. Disci pike
