Tbe article begins with this historical
The western boundary of tbe Mate of
Illinois is formed by tbe Mississippi
river. The course of ibis river past, and
for many miles above, the city of Ro-k
Island is southwest. Just below tbe city
Rock river enters tbe Mississippi. Tb-i
course of Rock river is also southwest,
but at such an angle as to bring it into
conjunction with the larger stream
at the point named. In tbe
Mississippi, three an1 one half miles
northeast from the mouth of Rock river
is tbe Island of Rock Island the prescDt
cite of the extensive United States gov
ernment works known as tbe R ck Inland
arsenal. On the north bank of Rock
river, a mile east from its mouth, was lo
cated for many years (perhaps a hundred)
preceding its destruction in 1831 by tbe
Illinois militia, tbe large Indian town of
Siukenuk. The date of tbe foundins: of
bis town is undetermined. Black Hawk,
the Sauk chief, in bis autobiography,
puta it as far back as 1731.
Others put it as late as 1783 tbe ap
proximate dtte ot (be abandonment bv
tbe Sauks of tbeir village on the Wiscon
sin river, which Augustin Grignon found
deserted in 1795. but which Jonathan
Carver, the English traveler, had found
inhabited in 1766.
The founders of the town tbe Sauk
Indians were nn Algonquin tribe, in
habitants originally, lontr with other
tribes, of the region about Montreal, Can
ada; extremely warlike in ('imposition and
pos-eFsing a nintory aboi;ruiiofir in inci
dents both romantic and terrible.
The writer then reviews the Indian his
tory up to that time and bringing it
down to tbe days of BUck Hiwk. lie
describes the bold promontorv known ts
Black Hawk Tower, the present delight
ful resort w bicb h&s been so much im

and m the same connection the scents of
his life and struggles hereabouts. Fort
Armstrong. Vandruff 's Itland. 68 well as
tbe Tower. The writer says:
On June 30th, a formnl encag( meet
was entered into, between Black Hawk
and General Gines and Governor Rey
nolds, that tbe 8auk and Fox nations
fcbould at ail times thereafter reside and
hunt on the wext sii'e of the Mississippi
river, and not return to tbe nst side
without the express con t nt of the presi
dent of the Uniled States or of the eov
o'nor of Illinois This engHgemtnt Black
Hawk failed to Keep. Just what actuated
him most in breaking it is perhaps not
clear, but amonc the motives at work
stand out prominently t,n unconquerable
love for tbe place of his birih and a de
sire there to spend the declining years of
bit life. Viewed from bis standpoint, the
Rock river country hd never rightfully
passed from the control of the Sauks; it
was tbe scene of the elm f events in the
life of that nation since their
expulsion fron Wisconsin; nature, more
over, had made it very beautiful.

"Suspended by the Thumbs."
The supporters of Carnegie and Har

way to be "progressive" is to vote the
tickert of the PinKertou plutocracy; to
stand by the McKinley aud force bills;
to stretch out our thumbs to the rack of
Carnegie "protection." But they have

Aunt Bridget's Baby."
This is the new and lively farce-com
edy in which the chubby-faced' George
Monroe was enabled to present at the
Bij m for eight weeks last season his
famous character of "Aunt Bridget,"
with environments more interesting and
adornments of dress and speech more or
nate and amusing than those which at
tended the rollicking characterization
when Monroe first offered it to tbe pub
lic in his famous "My Aunt Bridget."
Since the recent production at tbe Bijou
Monroe and bis manager haye been
abroad, atd tbe week's engagement will
be remarkable for a number of stage
novelties secured by the comedian be
yond tbe deep. Among the new intro
ductions will be ' It's a Job Lot," a song
presenting Aunt Bridget for tbe first
time in male attire; "It's Not Exactly
What He Says, But the Nasty Way He
Says It." and "The Floorwalker," a
clever musical number culled from the
offerings of the London vaudevilles. Of
course there will be other songs and
dances galore, mandolin selections by
the entire company, and innumerable
bright specialty introductions. The saoce
scenery and brilliant costumes used dur
ing the Bijou engagement will be em
ployed, while the cast will include a few
new members, among whom will be the
Quaker City Quartet, four grotesque
singers who have already attained con
siderable popularity in tne metropolis.
