The Pacific coast is writhing over the
prospective effect of the action of the
government of Victoria, Australia, in
creasing the import duty on Oregon pine
to $9.25 per 1,000 feet and the duty on
canned fruit to six cents per pound, or
about fifteen cents per can. This is in
retaliation against the McKinley bill.
The blow is x'fixticnlarly severe to fruit
growers and canners who have been for
years engaged in bnilding up a market
in Australia for California canned goods.

fact adds to the credit due the delegates
