An old Democrat was iiietrncting- a
vlass of the rbovs' how to vote nnder
the new election law. He said: "If yon
want to vote the straight Democratic
ticket, make a cross in the circle at the
bead of the Democratic column. If
yoa want to vote a split ticket don't.
And this by the way is a pretty good
form of instruction.
It may be remembered that while
Governor Fifer has frequently called out
the militia to overawe workingmen,
accused of meditating unlawful acts, h
has never made the slightest attempt te
enforce the laws habitually violated by
So tbe Democrats are accused of colo
nizing negroes in Pennsylvania for the
purpose of carrying the state at the elec
tion! It strikes me that this a good deal
like trying to put out a fire with coal
HE DOHP'NT NEED IT.
How silly is the story about Altgelds
using convict labor on a $75,000 resi
dence in Chicago. He is building no
residence. Hi won't need to for some
time, for after January 1st lie will
oecnpv the executive mansion in Spring
JfO EXFLA X ATTON .
And still Governor Fifor does not ex
plain how he came to patronize the
truck stores in buying supplies for the
GET OCT A FULL VOTE.
One of the most important things to
be looked after in the approaching elec
tion is the polling of a fuil vote by the
Democracy. It is evident that the Dem
ocrats cm carry the state for both the
state and national tickc-t if they get all
their votes in the box. The work of
getting out a full vote depends mainly
upon the local committeemen and their
preparations should be so complete that
not a single vote be lost. It is to be sup
posed that many school district commit
teemen has his list complete and that he
will warn every Democrat in his terri
tory of the importance of voting and
voting early. Giving himself ample
time lie &hould send for every Democrat
of whose coming he has the slightest
doubt. Township committeemen should
see that this work is thoroughly done
and if it is done Illinois will be found in
the Democratic column. Rememier the
polls open at 7 o'clock in the morning
and close at 5 in the afternoon.
EXCUSE Til EM.
Democratic papers are jumping onto
the Springfield Journal for printing
Judge Altgeld's picture at the head of
the account of the killing of the Daiton
gang at Coffeyville. The ' Journal folki
are not so much to blame, terror some
times masters the lxst of us. Realizing
that their gang of tate robbers is about
to be wiped out, it was natural for thc-m
in their fright to print the portrait of
the man who will do the job next
January. Please excuse them.
HE MAKES THEM FIT.
One of Governor Fifer's pet schemes
is to make his speeches suit his hearers.
In German communities he is opposed to
compulsory education, and in favor of
great personal liberty. In places where
he thinks it popular he abuses the Ger
mans and advocates female suffrage.
Two or three papers in Illinois printed
in foreign languages, have come out for
the Republican ticket, and some of the
party managers are trying to be greatly
elated thereat. These papers were re
fused blackmail by the Democratic stAte
committee, but their demands were sub
mitted to by the Republicans. They do
not cut any great figure at the best, and
the publication of their letters demand,
ing money from the Democrats has more
than offset their defection.
A NEW WORD.
The telegram from Chairman Clark of
the Republican state committee to the
national committee demanding half a
million pieces of literature has furnished
another slang name for that already
much named article money. Hereafter
it will be proper to 6jeak of a dollar bill
as a piece of campaign literature.
Yes, this is a great campaign, but the
Democratic meetings are growing larger
and larger as the election approaches and
several towns score the greatest rallies
of their records in this campaign. For
instance the 30,000 people at the Quincy
barbecue was the largest crowd ever
seen at a political gathering in that
Republicans do not know whether it
will be tietter for Blaine to speak or
keep still. He is a two-edged razor
liable to do damage either when in use
or just laying around.
Love rules the court, tbe camp, the prove,
But this we find where'er we roe,
That S0Z0D0NT alone snpplies
The dazzling teeth and dazzling dyes,
That lend a maiden half tbe charms
That win her to her lover's arma.
