Why rivmld there be a Monument la
London? Here is another word that is al
ways spelled with a capital initial. The
Monument means just one detinue thing,
and there is no qualifying adjective em
ployed to make the meaning clearer. The
Monument, which stands not far from
London bridge, was erected, oddly enough,
as a memorial of the great fire which in
lfiGo wrought such an immense amount of
damage. It was designed by Sir Chris
topher Wren, and is said to beat a distance
eqnal to its height from the spot where the
fire broke out, in Pudding lane. But who
can tell why the people of two centuries
ago thought it advisable to spend a large
sum of money to commemorate such an
event? As well, it would seem, might a
general set up a none to mark the spot
where he suffered a memorable defeat.
It cannot be said that the Londoners of
today feel a very deep interest in the work.
"Did you go up in the Monument?" said
one of them to me in surprise when I told
him that I had done so and found it well
worth while. "Well, well," he wont on,
"1 have gone past it every day for years on
my way to and from business and I nevet
thought of climbing all those steps." Tbe
............. . . i
nutea aoncsnmtor tne Monument is an ,
imoressive work, and as 1 chose a fairlv
clear day as good a day probably as is i
often met with in Ixndon for the ascent !
the view was certainly rewarding, though
doubtless not a tenth part of the mighty
city could be seen.
At the top is an attendant with several
small telescopes in bis charge, which he
proffers to all visitors. The following no
tice, which is worthy of mention by reason
of itsquaintnessof expression, is displayed:
"The telescopes are lent at one penny U
each person. Ten minutes allowed."

Bpringrs Below Salt Water.
At Bahrin, in the center of the most tor
rid part of a very torrid belt, as though it
were nat ure's intention to make the plaes
as unbearable as possible, water from wells
is something unknown. a
Great shafts have been Minktoadeptb
of 100, 200, 300 and even .100 fee t, but nj ways
with the same result no water. This se
rious drawback notwithstanding, a com
paratively mimc-rous population contrivt
to live there, thanks to copious springs
which burst forth from the bottom of th
gulf more than a mile from the shore. Th
water from these springs is obtained in a
most novel and curious manner.
Machadores, whose sole occupation is
that of furnishing the people of Rahrin
with the life giving fluid, repair to that
portion of the gulf where the springs art
situated and bring away with them hun
dreds of skin bags full of the water each
day. The water of the gulf at the plan
where the springs burst forth is nearly 800
feet deep, but these machadores (divers)
manage to fill their goatskin sacks by div
ing to the bottom and holding the mouths
of the bags over the fountain jet; this.
too, without allowing the salt water of the
gulf to mix with it.
The source of these submarine fountains
is thought to be in the hills of Osmond, 40C
or 500 miles away. Being situated at th
bottom of the gulf, it is a mystery how
they were ever discovered, bnt the fact re
mains that, they have been known since th
dawn of history. Philadelphia Press
