The Feather Brush Amone; the Chinese.
One of the commonest objects in Chinese
houses is the feather brush. - This hardly
ornamental article has a history an
ancestry which imparts a peculiar value
to it to the Chinese mind. There was a
time when the feather brush had not been
put to the base use of imperfectly dusting
furniture. It bore an honorable p;irt in
the ancient chivalry of the country, being
a recognized standard for the mustering of
soldiers to battle.
An allusion is made to it in the writings
of Chuang-Tzu, an ancient historian, who
tells us that when the great military leader
Sun, standing on an eminence which over
looked the plain, waved on high his plume
of feathers, the men of the state of Ting
rushed with one accord into the field in
There is something strange in the fact of
this honorable instrument's having been
degraded from the battlefield to the bou
doir, but the poets of China view the mat
ter in quite a different way. It appears
that a certain empress first laid her fair
hand upon this ancient emblem of war
and appropriated it for her own use, re
ceiving much praise at the time from the
But aside from all poetic sentiment, the
fact seems to be that the empress wanted
something to switch away the insects
which infested her apartments. Then it
became a fashionable article of use and or
nament, and a lively trade in the feather
brush sprang up, fostered by the govern
ment. It was made generally of actual
feathers and was used for dusting furnitureExchange.
How and when men first learned to make
hay will probably never be known. For
haymaking is a "process," and the product
is not simply sun dried grass, but crass
which has been partially fermented, and
is as much the work of men's hands as
flour or cider. Probably its discovery was
due to accident, but possibly man learned
it from the pikas, the "calling hares" of
steppes, which cut and stack hay for the
winter. That idea would fit i i nicely with
thetheorythat central Asia was the "home
of the Aryan race," if we were still al
lowed to believe it, and haymaking is cer
tainly an art mainly practiced in cold
countries for winter forage. Probably
there are no meadows in the world so good
as those in England or so old. Yet from
the early Anglo-Saxon times old meadow
has been distinguished from "pastures"
and has always leen scarce.
Two-thirds of what is now established
meadow land still shows the marks of
ridge and furrow, and from the great time
required to make a meadow ten years nt
least on the best land, 100 years on the
worst men have always been reluctant to
break up old pasture. The ancient mead
ows, with their great trees and close, rich
turf, are the sole portion of the earth's
surface which modern agriculture respects
and leaves in peace. Hence the excellence
of the meadows of England and the envy
of the American. Ixindon Letter.
