About the Jamba Ferrr.
Mr. Gaylord, who was with Barnnrr
when Jumbo was bought, has beengiviDg
some curious details in an interview at
Ilong-Kong. Anxious to get up a sensa
tion, Barnum (according to this account)
gave 1,000 to raise an action to endeavor
to interdict the departure of Jumbo. No
sooner was this done than the whole of the
representatives of the American papers in
London betran to cable columns of new.
about Jumbo. The Jumbo fever soon
caught on. Jumbo's keeper, Scott, was
secured for (I0 a year. The preparations

Stockton's Story in Heathen I.an.l.
The Karens are a (vine in ujipor lJtirrn."h
who have been (.artially rotivrU-.l to
Chris! iaaity. They were never Mol wor
sliijurs, fo.r tiny hail a strance tradition
that a white n.ati thouhl come in a white
boat, wiili a white book, which should
teach them about the great spirit whom
they worshiped.
Miss Kvau cousin of Frank Stockton,
and a missiuuary to this tribe, has recently
returned home. She expected to pass the
Btimnier with theStocktons, but Mr. .Stock
ton was ordered abroad for his heVith, and
they passed each other in midooean. She
tells a story in regard to the famous "Lady
or the Tiirer."
She used to tell this tale over and over
aain to the Karen women as they gathered
about her, their briirht, dusky faces full of
Intense interest, and each time when she
came to the uestion, "Which was it" the
answer invariably was "The Tiger." Their
ideas of reven.ee were such that, they could
not understand a love self sacrificing
enough to cause the princess to save her
lover at the expense of her own suffering.
Miss Evans wrote Frank Stockton about
this, and he replied: "I have received many
letters from notable men and women, by
which 1 felt greatly honored, but when !
beard of those heathen Karen women,
almost at the ends of the earth listening to
my story, I said, 'That is fame. " New
York Recorder.
Boiling Macaroni.
An authority says that in boiling maca
roni it is fatal to permit it to stop boiling
for a moment until done. Have plenty of
salted water in the saucepan at the boiling
point when the sticks are added, and when
they are tender throw in a glass of cold
water to stop the cooking suddenly, and
drain at once. New York Times.

Mora Real Than Theatrical.
A police court is a theater wherein are
enacted dramas more varied and fnore en
thralling than any that issue from the busy
playwright's brain scenes acted not by
mere "puppets," but by the very char-"
acters themselves that run through the
whole gamut of theatrical expression, from
blackest, deepest tragedy to comedy and
ecreaming farce. London Tit-Bits.
