literature, and were fireti with an ambi
tion to exterminate the Indian race. Tuey
had procured a miscellaneous assortment
of fire amis and taken box car passage
for tbe gladsome wes-t. They pot as far a
Beatrk-e, Neb., and encamped in the out
skirts of town. They had a t-maU tent,
into which they had all crowded, and were
curled up like a basket of kittens, dream
ing of future conquests, when the fathers
of three of them arrived in search of the
runaways. They held a consultation, and
decided to frighten the youngsters by an
Indian attack. Myself and two other trav
eling men entered into the scheme, and
half the town turned out to see the fun.
We surrounded the tent and sent up a
blood curdling Indian warwboop, then be
gan to beat on tin pans and fire off our
pistols. Then we listened, expecting to
hear cries of woe and wails from the inte
rior of the tent. But we didn't. There
was a rattling of old muskets and single
barreled shot guns and a second later we
were falling over each other to get out of
ranee. The youngsters aimed too high
and no one was hurt. We reassembled at
the hotel and htld a powwow. It was de
cided that the proper thing to do was to
send the city marshal to capture the
youthful outlaws, which we succeeded ia
doing." tt. Louis Glole-Democrat.

In 1ST15 Ijszt went on atourinthe French
provinces. He arrived at the little town
of L to give a concert, as announced.
But the inhabitants appeared to take but
little interest in musical matters, for when
the musician appeared on the platform he
found himself face to face with an audience
numbering exactly seven persons. Liszt
stepped very calmly to the front and, bow
ing respectfully to the array of empty
benches be delivered himself as follows:
Ladies and gentlemen. I feel extremely flat
tered by yoor presence here this evening-, but
this room is not at all suitable the air is liter
ally stifling. Will yon be eood enough to ac
company n;e to my hotel, "here I will have
the piaDO conveyed? We shall be q'lite com
fortable there, and I w iU go through the whole
of my programme.
The offer was unanimously accepted, and
Liszt treated his guests not ouiy to a splen
did concert, but an excellent sniper into
the bargain. Next day, when the illustri
ous virtuoeo appeared to give his second
concert, the hall was not large enough to
contain the crowd which claimed admit

Trying to Do Too Much.
There was once a woman who was the
despair of all the other women of her ac
quaintance. Her house was as pretty as
possible and always in perfect order; she
kept it on a very small income, and kept it
beautifully; she made all her own clothes
and those of her child: she trimmed hats
for herself and all her sisters; she did fancy
work; she painted chairs, thereby saving
sometimes as much as seventy-five cents;
she taught a class in a mission sewing
school; she took lessons in cooking; ahe
belonged to several charitable organiza
tionsarid the end of that woman was
nerrous prostration and a sanitarium.
Amid her many occupations she had some
how lost sight of the fact that a certain
amount of amusement is necessary for the
buman mind, c-be bad never had time
or rest or diversion. And ber husband as
he paid the bill for medical services possi
bly reflected how much better, and not
only better but cheaper, wonld prevention

Dr. Arthur Stradling. writing of a num
ber of vipers which were presented to him,
eays: "Vipers have very larae poison glands,
and I obtained the venom by allowing them
to bite on a small porcelain spoon made on
purpose, covered over with oiied silk, like
a drum, ice fangs, siuiing through tue
silk into the hollow of the spoon, would
each discharge a tiny drop or globule of
virus, and this I would collect and store in
fine glass tubes or on dried blotting paper.
"There are many ot her methods of getting
the poison, but I think this is the best. In
India the natives procure cobra venom by
inducing the enraged reptiles to strike at a
shell, across which a leaf is stretched.
Each of my snakes could be depended upon
to yield poison once a day. but it was only
a trace at a time just a glistening speck
that yon could hardly see.
"Of course this was a slow process, and
one day I made a calculation that if my
sixteen vipers bad kept in full health and
vigor, and had yielded daily nil the year
around, and supposing it had been possi
ble to keep the fluid without letting it dry
op, it would have taken more than seven
years to produce a quart. This will give
you some id-a of the f arful strength of
the stuff when you think how minute i
the quantity injected at each bite." Man

In Wright's selection of Latin stories
there is an account of a woman described
as lying on her deathlied, when her daugh
ter urged her to send for a priest that she
might confess her sins, to whom her moth
er replied: "Why? If I am ill today, to
morrow or next day I shall be welL" But
the daughter, seeing ber become worse,
brought in several of her neighbors, who
ureed the same thing, to whom she said:
"What do you talk alout, or what do you
fear? I shall not die these twelve years. I
have heard the cuckoo, which told me so."
At length she became speechless and was
at the point of death.
Then her daughter sent for the priest,
who came, bringing what was necessary
to perform the last duties, and approach
ing her, he asked if she had anything to
confess. All she SuiJ was "kuckue,"
(cuckoo). Ag.iin the priest offered her the
sacrament and asked her if she believed
the Lord was her Saviour, and ehe replied
"kuckue," so tbe priest went away and
shortly afterward she died. All the Year
